Default How is Sydney's drinking water supply purified?

Ultraviolet? Chlorination?

In my trip to Sydney in 1999, I noticed that the water didn't have the
usual chlorine smell that we have in North America. I stayed at the
University of NWS campus.

Can anybody tell me what Sydney used to purify its water? Does it work
well?

If this isn't the best forum for this question, please advise where I
should post it. Thanks.

North American drinking water is dragged out of the local river or ground
water, it is the combined urine and industrial wastes of all the upstream
cities.
Australian water is rainwater collected in a dam, and so needs a lot less
chlorine than anything in North America, even Adelaide
Never had anything like all those Great lakes cities, where the water inlet
is 500m downstream of the sewage plant, just watched a tv show on that, 15
dead young children and hundreds of cases of the runs.
why Bottled water is such a big deal in the US

I can't comment on the US mate, but you clearly haven't
spent much time west of the Great Dividing Range.

Admittedly, neither has most of our own population:-)

Adelaide readers would certainly find your comments
interesting:

That doesn't mean our water is bad, but in the interior a
lot of it comes from rivers or artesian sources and has to
be appropriately treated.

Adelaide is the worst city water in Aus,
and would be among the better city water supplies in the US.
Every day in the news there are 'Boil Order's for the water here, repeated
ad-nauseum (phrase chosen on purpose),
to combat some contamination or other
Since the OP asked about Sydney the answer about dams was correct.
Melbourne Sydney Brisbane Perth Adelaide and Darwin get most of their water
from dams.
Adelaide gets some from the Murray
If it the OP had been about Kingoonya Alice Tennant Creek or Wyalong the
answer may have been different
