Exactly. Thailand is one of the worst places for that sort of people,
KS road one of the most disgusting places in Asia.

Seems like a lot of thais disagree with you on that.
An increasing number of young hip thais seem to take a fancy to this area
much more so than in the past when just about the only thais you`d spot in

Or when they buy Phat Thai from a Khao San Road Street vendor and pay 80 baht.

I'm not making my opinions on the fact if some Thais may disagree with
me or not.

KS road is a place of mass tourism of the worst sort. Of course, as
the word "mass" shows, there are lots of people who search exactly for
that sort of "attractions". They are free to their opinion and I'm
free to mine.

It is much harder to cope with Venice Italy that about any place in
Thailand. It is smelly too. France alone receives about ten times more
foreign tourists than Thailand. Reeperbahn is pretty popular too. And those
lines and alleys closer to Elbe.

Hello Thomas F.U.
Just to let you know there are other opinions. I wandered into Koasan Road
by chance at about 9pm on 31 October. I thought it was great - not
predominately backpackers but a good mix of people, most in party mood, many
dressed for Halloween, no drunks and plenty of smiling policemen. I don't
think my judgement was impaired by the chocolate ice cream I consumed and I
regretted only not carrying a camera.

Now the only ones you spot are the ones trying to sell drugs to the
backpackers. Khao San Road is *NOT* popular among Thai. Most look at
it like a disease they are forced to live with.

Good to see someone here who knows what he's talking about, unlike
those who apparently haven't been to KSR for many years.

Some of the pubs there nowadays are almost exclusively filled with
Thais, mostly young couples enjoying themselves. A good example is
Susie Pub, which was jam packed with Thai people last time I was there
with still more queuing up outside to get it. If the prices charged
are anything to go by, it was a fairly well-to-do crowd as well.

I think it started a few years back when a few Thai people started
going there out of curiosity, just to see what this place that
attracts so many farangs was all about. It kind of caught on and
became something of a trendy area for Thais to hang out at.

Khao San Road has changed a lot over the last years, and for the good.
Middle and high class hotels has been opened in Khao San Road a few years
ago and the people who visit Khao San Road now are not only the backpackers
from the older times.
Also night clubs has opened recently, whose entry price or price for a
regular consumption is not what the typical backpacker would spend.

The backpackers as such, has moved to the streets around Khao San Road where
a room for the night is still available for a few bucks.

I was in Khao San Road a few weeks ago, and I have seen many Thai students
walking and having good time. Completely different from the view of Khao San
Road 4 or 5 years ago.

You should get out of the hermetic rooms at the Marriot hotel and visit
places which are "below your standard" like Khao San Road. It will surely
improve your knowledge about Thailand.

Regards,

Carlos
