I'm looking ahead to next year and thinking of where our family

of your favorite US holiday destinations other than beaches (we
live in FL) ?

If you are interested in staying in the Southeast, here's 2 ideas:
1. The Biltmore in Asheville, NC. They decorate the house to
the nines and have live music.

2. Callaway Gardens, near Columbus, Georgia. They light the
grounds with thousands of lights and have nightly carriage
rides. http://www.callawayonline.com/

If you are looking nationally, and want something civilized:
1. New York City. The Christmas Show at Radio City Music
Hall. http://www.radiocity.com/eventcalendar/home
2. The Alamo and Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas.

If you live in Florida, why not go to someplace like one of the New
England states that looks like a Currier & Ives Christmas? There's also
Manhattan, but it can be quite costly during the Holidays. Still, if
you find a good place for your dollar you can't beat Rockefeller Center
/ Democracy Plaza for Christmas spirit. There's plenty of diversions
for parents and teens to enjoy. Maybe you can get tickets for Letterman
or Conan. They tape earlier than these shows air. Rarely seeing the
white stuff, your kids might just get a kick if the city gets a fresh
snowfall.

If you want to see a place with lots of Christmas spirit, visit the Twin
Cities of Minneapolis & St. Paul. Minneapolis has a section of town
called Skyways. You park in a heated garage, go into a heated store
like Marshall Fields. Then you walk out on a climate controlled glass
bridge connected to another building. If you get there early enough you
can position yourself on the skyway that connects Marshall Fields and
watch Hollidazzle. What is Hollizazzle? It's a Holiday parade that
rivals Macy's Thanksgiving parade. They don't do it just one night.
They do it every night for a whole week! Each night it's different
floats, marching bands, celebrities. Sure it's maybe - 10 F, but
you're inside. Those folks in the parade? They're mostly Minnesotans
they live there and know how to deal with the cold.

Thanks to all for the responses. I had NYC and San Antonio in mind.
Funny thing is we have been to most of the other places mentioned in the
thread (although not at Christmas) except for New England and London.
Would definitely like to do those someday too.

This year we are taking a cruise over the holiday, but, I think next
year NYC will probably be it.

Thanks again

Go west to California, Nevada, and/or Arizona! I think there's plenty
for 2 adults and 2 teens on a budget and I think the region is much
more beautiful in the winter than in any other season. Here are some
thoughts on places to visit in the region:

1) The Lake Tahoe area - this really is one of my favorite holiday
destinations. The area offers skiing and other snow-related
activities, gambling/gaming (Stateline, Carson City, and Reno/Sparks),
old frontier mining towns like Virginia City, and is a good
jumping-off point for Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada Foothills ("Gold
Country") (actually, Sacramento or Fresno are better jumping-off
points for these destinations). Really, the whole area offers plenty
of opportunities to entertain yourselves.

2) Further south in Las Vegas - Las Vegas offers shows,
people-watching, good weather, more gambling/gaming, and is also a
good jumping-off point. Southern Nevada offers some nice state parks
and you can also get to Death Valley, Hoover Dam/Lake Mead, Lake
Havasu City (if you want to see London Bridge), or even the Grand
Canyon. Again, if snow and skiing is what you want, Mammoth Lakes is
only a few hours away and a very easy drive from Las Vegas.

3) San Francisco - couldn't even begin to point out what the Bay Area
has to offer. You can drop off the teens on Pier 39, the
Haight-Ashbury neigborhood, and across the bay in Berkeley.

Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA.

Amtrack to NYC.

Mosey around Big Apple. Hershey Park (Lancaster area, PA)

Usually a crispy cool X mas. Probably no snow, however.
