Default Pilots doze off during redeye flight

Old news making the rounds - March 2004

Full link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21595546/

Snip:
DENVER - Two commercial pilots allegedly fell asleep on a flight
between Baltimore and Denver, with one pilot waking up to "frantic"
calls from air traffic controllers warning them they were approaching
the airport at twice the speed allowed.

The March 2004 event, which was discussed during a Congressional
hearing Wednesday, was reported by the captain on the flight on NASA's
Aviation Safety Reporting System, which allows crew members to
anonymously document incidents.

Not old news, because it hadn't previously been disclosed.

Flying an airliner over long distances can be extremely boring, since it is
actually flown entirely by computer. There are a few necessary tasks that
pilots must perform, but not enough to keep a tired pilot from potentially
nodding off from time to time. These pilots had worked several shifts in
close succession and were no doubt exceptionally tired; it's not surprising
that given a situation in which they have little to do but look out the
window, they ended up drifting off.

Some aircraft have vigilance safeguards built in, that sound an alarm to wake
pilots if they don't touch or adjust any controls for a certain period.
Apparently this aircraft did not, or they weren't asleep long enough for it to
activate.
