Default Cruise Ship Arsenal?

So, pirates went after Oceania Nautica in the Gulf of Aden. I know the
drill is to outrun the pirates,
as was done, but it makes me wonder about what the cruise ships carry these
days.

They certainly have the flashbang devices, and can man the fire hoses to
repel boarders.
They must have some small arms on board, pistols and semi-automatic weapons
to put down
mutinies, control panicing passengers being evacuated, shoot sharks, etc.

But do they have any fully automatic weapons, such as assault rifles
(ie:AK-47 or something
more sophisticated), and my big question would be if they have machine guns,
which is what
I would like to have a trained security staff use for pirate defense.

I dont think they need rocket launchers, which are tricky to use, although
the bad guys probably
have them, as that is what was used against Seabourne. Same thing with hand
grenades, which
are just too dangerous unless you really know what you are doing with them.
Although some
smoke grenades or teargas ones would be useful, and might be in the small
arms locker.

Does anyone know what the ships actually carry in these troubled waters?

I believe the attack on Seabourn a couple of years back was warded off
with some type of sonic gun ...
or a mariachi band ... broadcasting the karaoke contest would have
been too cruel ...

And, following the aural assault on the Papal Nunciatura in Panama,
it has been declared contrary to the Geneva Convention to play rock
music at high levels.

Um, 20 year old super models or "more experienced" women? One might
attract the pirates.

Perhaps, it's time to bring back skeet-shooting with real targets.

This could be the on-board revenue generator of the year with classes
and competition every day each ship could have a ready army in case of
attack.

The present idea of running away from attackers will not succeed as the
culprits get faster and faster boats.

Using noise will not work as they now have noise protectors of their
ears.

The only thing that will work to stop this growing problem is to kill
the *******s.
This might as well be a cruise activity and it will be fun to see which
sharp-shooting passenger can kill the most.

INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION
MSC/Circ.623/Rev.3

PIRACY AND ARMED ROBBERY AGAINST SHIPS
Guidance to shipowners and ship operators, shipmasters and crews on
preventing and suppressing acts of piracy and armed robbery against
ships

....

Firearms
45 The carrying and use of firearms for personal protection or
protection of a ship is strongly discouraged.

46 Carriage of arms on board ship may encourage attackers to carry
firearms thereby escalating an already dangerous situation, and any
firearms on board may themselves become an attractive target for an
attacker. The use of firearms requires special training and aptitudes
and the risk of accidents with firearms carried on board ship is great.
In some jurisdictions, killing a national may have unforeseen
consequences even for a person who believes he has acted in self
defence.

Excellent comment.

I personally would prefer a "Street Sweeper" on a
mount on each side of the bridge. Perhaps a Vulcan
20 mm as well. Since the new pirates you fast
launches, a few 20 mm HEU rounds would more that
discourage them. Much better than grape and chain.

Recall that the ships taken so far have all been
cargo /tanker ships with small crews and sitting
relatively low in the water. At night you would be
lucky to find one person awake on some ships.
Makes a really attractive target for the new breed
of pirate.
Cheers,
John in LALALand (On the Left Coast)
