suggestions, links or advice on nice places to stop in the city or just
outside for three of us realistic money!!
Thanks Steve..

I've stayed at the Goodearth, on Wickham Terrace. Basic, clean and
cheap. A brisk walk or a short taxi fare to the CBD.
http://www.goodearth.com.au/ . They also have a hotel in Perth, but I
haven't stayed at it.

A couple of web-sites worth checking. Wotif only operates a few weeks in
advance, but at least it will give you an idea of pricing amd you can
then contact the hotel direct for further advice. I used priceline.com
and used it very successfully last year; I'll be trying the singapore
version later this year.

www.wotif.com.au
or www.wotif.com for your local.

Hard to say without knowing what you mean by realistic, but Palace
Backpackers might be worth a look. They do individual rooms:

And they're right in the middle of Brissy.

Goodearth is very popular. Next good value is Metro Tower Mill. Both close
to the city and attractions.
