florida gulf coast
We are thinking of a couple of weeks in Florida next year. Flying into Miami
and then renting a car and heading for the gulf coast. Where are the nicest places to see ? We will be using two weeks of our timeshare so can stay in two different places. regards, Joanne |

We will be using two weeks of our timeshare so can stay in two different places. I grew up in Miami and this was one of my favorite Spring trips. I suggest that you cross the state on US 41 (Tamiami Trail) not on I-75 (Alligator Alley). Its slower, but gives you a chance to stop at the Everglades Nat'l. Park Shark Valley Visitor Center & take a tram ride, and also the Big Cypress Natl. Pres. Center. When you reach the coast, you may want to stop at the resort beach town of Marco Island. It was an empty sandy island until it was "discovered" by So. Florida developers. Then head North to "old money" town of Naples and "historic" Ft. Meyers (visit the Thomas Edison home). Between Naples & Ft.Meyers, inland is the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary (worth a side trip). Off the coast are the islands of Sanibel (world renown shelling) and Captiva (sandy beaches). Depending on how focused you want to be, I'd stay either in Marco Island, Ft. Meyers/Sanibel, and/or Tampa Bay areas. Items of interest in the Tampa area include the Aquarium & Busch Gardens. You can return from Tampa in a day on I-75. [R] |
