Grand Turk vs Half Moon Cay "Horseback Ride & Swim" Excursion ?
Perhaps someone can offer up some personal experience with either the
Grand Turk or Half Moon Cay horseback ride and swim excursion... maybe someone has done them both.... When we were in Roatan we missed out on the beach horseback ride because it fully sold out via the Internet prior to the cruise departure... Since I'm still hearing about that today... I'm going to book one in the next few days. TIA jay Fri Feb 05, 2010 |

Jay, the best advice is to do them separately. The darn horses sink, and then you end up swimming anyway. -- Nonny ELOQUIDIOT (n) A highly educated, sophisticated, and articulate person who has absolutely no clue concerning what they are talking about. You could do them consecutively on the same tour. -- I get off on '57 Chevys I get off on screamin' guitars --Eric Clapton |

We did the beach horseback ride in Jamaica (I think) where the horse actually swims a short route in the water. I was on the first horse, fortunately. As we knew, but didn't consider, horses poop almost constantly. Well, they don't stop just because they're in the water. The people who were not at the front were waste deep in water with poop floating by. We decided not to do it again. Plus, I don't think the horses were having a great time either. |

The people who were not at the front were waste deep in water with poop floating by. We decided not to do it again. Plus, I don't think the horses were having a great time either. One trip when we went to Half Moon I did the parasailing, and I saw the Horseback Ride and Swim, but I have no other experience of this excursion. My children used to swim their ponies/horses for fun sometimes. (We had them on a farm which fronted on the St. Mary's River in Maryland.) Usually they rode bareback with web bridles or with a halter so as not to get the tack wet. Horses are slippery when wet which added to the fun for them. They also would swim in the farm pond which was a place with a deep drop off on one side and a sloping side where they could climb out at only one place. So the horses had to leap in and swim to the other side. Some horses liked it and some didn't. One of the ponies didn't automatically put his head up out of the water so his nostrils were under water. The farm pond was small so I guess he just held his breath. But he really didn't care for it all that much. When they went into the water from the beach, they would walk out as far as they could and then they would bounce off the bottom until they actually had to swim. This made a fun ride. My sister has done a beach ride on Amelia Island FL but I don't think it was swimming - just galloping along the beach. Personally I would book both of them which would give you a better chance of actually being able to do it. Half Moon is a tender port and sometimes it is too rough to go in. Plus it is usually the end or the beginning of the cruise and can be skipped due to various things happening. |
