Hawaii-# of islands recommendations
Hi, We're going to Hawaii for about 11 days in January and are just trying to finalize our itinerary. Originally, we were thinking of hitting 3 islands: the big island, Maui and Kauai. While planning the trip, we realized that we are going to have to rent a car on each island and then go to the airport multiple times and started to think that 3 islands within 11 days may feel a bit rushed. So, we're now thinking about just going to 2 islands and shorten the trip to 9 days or so. We'd like to get some advice on which island to skip or if you guys think that 3 islands in 11 days is doable. We're thinking about skipping out on the big island and just going to Maui and Kauai. Any suggestions? Thanks. |

Each island-hop will burn most of a day by the time you account for packing and unpacking, rental car, flying, etc. It would have to be a long trip for me to consider going to more than two islands. I haven't been to either Maui or Kauai, but was very satisfied with the short time I spent on the Big Island. All but the NW corner seemed pleasantly untouristed, and with all that land, there was plenty of variety. And although some of the other islands now grow coffee, the Big Island is still the only Hawaiian island where you can see lava hit the water. The catch is that it's the one island where driving distances can get to be a hassle, but I felt it was worth the trip. I'd go back. -- --- Eric Holeman Chicago Illinois USA |

I agree. Two islands should be much more enjoyable. We're thinking about skipping out on the big island and just going to Maui and Kauai. Any suggestions? What are your interests? I personally really like the Big Island, but for all I know, Maui and Kauai might suit your interests better. Tell us what you want to see and do, and we can give you more informed opinions. Patty |

We'd like to get some advice on which island to skip or if you guys think that 3 islands in 11 days is doable. We're thinking about skipping out on the big island and just going to Maui and Kauai. Three islands in 11 days is certainly doable, but, I think you'll feel rushed and disappointed that you didn't get to do some of the things you discovered once you got there. You could easily spend 11 days on the Big Island since it is almost twice as big as all the other islands combined and has the most geographical variety. For that reason, I think, your instinct to leave out the Big Island and concentrate on Maui and Kauai is a wise decision and that's what I'd recommend. Plan to visit the Big Island on a later trip. For information about each of the Hawaiian Islands you are invited to visit my Hawaii webpage at: http://hawaii.home.att.net/ and for information about Maui, you may go to: http://keith.martin.home.att.net/vMaui.html - and for information about Kauai, you invited to see: http://keith.martin.home.att.net/vKauai.html - and on my webpages you'll find no pop-ups, no advertising, no cookies and nothing for sale. That's up to you. You certainly don't need to rent a car if you don't want to though. So, we're now thinking about just going to 2 islands and shorten the trip to 9 days or so. You can't help but have a nice vacation that way. |

I agree; we did our first trip to Hawaii last Christmas, and originally planned on Oahu, Maui, and the big island. But that puts two travel days (along with the necessary packing and unpacking) in the middle of the trip, just after you've settled in and started to relax. We wound up with 5 days on Maui and two in Honolulu; next time, it will be the Big Island ONLY. (Honolulu has some things you will probably want to do ONCE, on your first trip - such as visting the Arizona memorial, walking through Chinatown, etc. - but once you've done the usual tourist things there, I can't really recommend going back.)
