Need advance lodging plans for May (Portugal)?

I've got a week to spend in Portugal and am planning to split my time
between Lagos and Lisbon (and vicinity). It's going to be the third
week of May which I hope keeps me in front of the main summer rush. My
question is whether I would be advised to make lodging arrangements in
advance, in particular for Lagos. Normally, I do make a point of
arranging everything in advance, but for this particular trip, I'm very
flexible and therefore considering waiting to make plans until I've
arrived and checked everything out. Anyone have an idea how much
difficulty this might create for me?

priced lodging in Lagos that would be recommended? The references I've
looked at are very limited in describing lodging options for here. I'm
not going to have a car, so ideally I would want to be centrally located
if possible.
I didn't find any recent suggestions about Lagos when searching this
newsgroup. As for Lisbon, I'm expecting to have a lot more options so
I'm less concerned about finding lodging on the move here-- but maybe
I'm just naïve?

I really liked Mar Azul in the centre of Lagos. If you get a room facing the
back it will be quiet and you'll have a nice view of the ocean. If you're a
single traveller, they don't have a lot of single rooms, so calling a couple
of days ahead to reserve is a good idea.

If you like nightlife, then a pensâo in the Bairro Alto in Lisbon is what
you should look for.
