How much cash do I need to travel these destinations for a year?

I am planning to plug myself out of the system for a year and travel
the East and perhaps a South American country also.

The places I want to visit are Indonesia, Thailand, India and China.

Roughly how much money would I need to do these travels? How far would
3000 pounds sterling go or would I need to save more? Im hoping to
cross most borders overland and only fly when departing and returning
to London. Assuming the flights are paid for - would I be able to
subsist and move around these countries for roughly a year on the 3000
pounds?

Any advice from people who have done something similar would be
appreciated.

I've not done a RTW but know several people who have. It seems the minimum
most people try a year long RTW on is about US$10,000. In that case, you'd
need a little more than double what you have now. I think you would
definitely start feeling a budget squeeze if you only take £3000.

That's about US$15 per day...you could just about do it, if you don't
mind really roughing it (with respect to accomodation, food,
transport) and not spending much time in cities. 4000 pounds, no
problem. China is more expensive than the others you mentioned; you
might reduce the amount of time you plan to spend there. Overland
travel in those countries is usually really cheap, but note that there
are cheap flights on certain routes (e.g. Bangkok-Kolkata US$120)
that you might find worthwhile.
