Default 4WD necessary for trip from Darwin to Perth in August?

We would like to do a 4-week-trip from Darwin to Perth starting mid of
August with a camping car; should we (2 persons) rent a 4WD or are we
fine with a "normal" one?
Are there "major sights" which are not accessible without 4WD? Any
advice on a suitable car hire?
Thanks, Daniela

Daniela,

Personally, I'd go with a 4WD if you can afford it. It will give you more
flexibility for seeing places that are more off the beaten track, if you so
desire. Not that you will absolutely need 4WD in most instances (especially
since it will be the dry season), it's just that rental companies are usually
very strict about not taking 2WD vehicles on unsealed roads. That being said,
there are still some "major sights" that are probably inaccessible without 4WD,
most notably the magnificent Bungle Bungle Ranges in the Kimberley. With 4WD
you could also more reasonably consider doing the Gibb River Rd (linking
Kununurra and Derby) which is unsealed for several hundred kilometers and which
offers access to a number of spectacular waterfalls and gorges.
