check all sources. I use kayak.com (just changed its name to
something else, but I think Kayak still works) to compare prices. I
also call the airlines directly. sometimes I use an agent.

It rather depends on what Continent you are starting from!

It really depends on a number of factors. Assuming you are flying from
North America...

Go to matrix.itasoftware.com to find who flies where and when. Prices
will be quoted but you can ignore them.

If you are looking at discount (non-IATA-member) airlines, try looking
on each airline's website for a deal.

If you are looking at flying on an IATA-member airline (which is the
large majority of scheduled air transport between the two continents),
invest your time and energy looking for a good discount
bricks-and-mortar travel agent. You won't find the best air fare for
these airlines on any website, not even on the airlines' own websites.

List of IATA-member airlines:

My site is powered by Travelocity so we are usually lower. Check my
website at http://liveearthtravel.net (Int. Explorer) works best.
Click on Book Travel--you can check all airlines, event tickets. etc.
My phone # is on site if you need more help---Happy Traveling---Irene

As others have suggested, it is going to depend upon the specifics
of your intended trip. A few factors to consider.

1. Round trip, open jaw, one way? The vast majority of folks
will buy round trip tickets. But lately we've been doing alot of
open jaw (starting from and returning to home, but arriving and
departing europe from different cities. It may not save you much
unless you have to spend alot of time and money to get back
to your port of arrival/departure. Your best value in open jaw
may not be with a single airline so the shops like Orbitz,
Travelocity,
etc. may be able to assemble you a better price.

2. Departure city. Last couple of years we've been driving
to a major airport (about 4 hours away) so that our point of departure
to europe is a direct flight there. You might be surprised how much
money can be saved if one makes a connection in europe instead of
in the US.
