Ticket Buying 101, please
Is there a consumer-oriented Web site that explains how
to shop for airline tickets to get the best price, etc.? My mother-in-law is traveling between Washington and Los Angeles in June and my wife wants me to buy the tickets now, four months in advance! What a ridiculous notion...isn't it? -- Charles Packer http://cpacker.org/whatnews mailboxATcpacker.org |

You can start at
http://www.smartertravel.com/travel-...html?id=313108 But, as you might suspect, it doesn't cover everything one can and should do in booking air travel. |

Thanks...looks like $480-520 for a non-stop BWI-LAX in the latter half of June. I'll sign up for one of those fare-alerts for this destination. -- Charles Packer http://cpacker.org/whatnews mailboxATcpacker.org |

I just checked for 6/20 - 6/27 and found fares on AirTran from $431 to $455. If you are willing to travel from Dulles, you could do much better. For the same dates, Virgin America has fares from $359-$380. Try www.sidestep.com IMO, sales will start showing up in April. |

Not reall to ridiculous. With a 10 percent discount code, I recently got SJC-IAD, DCA-SJC for $202 (all-in) on AA, and that was only 2 weeks prior to departure. It depends on a lot of things. Often you might find sales close to the time of your travel, but often you get the biggest discount months ahead. Sometimes the cheapest seats are sold out well in advance. If you wait, you also limit the number of avaiable options you have. |
