Default San Jose, Costa Rica

I am planning a trip to costa rica soon and am wondering if San Jose
is worth exploring. Is there anything worth seeing? Parks,
architecture, culture, etc? Any comments will be appreciated.
Thanks, in advance.

I think you'd be better spending your time exploring the country other than
SJ. But if you do decide to go to San Jose, I can recommend a good B&B.
We do not like the East Coast / Cahutia area.

I've spent a fair amount of time in SJ, and I wouldn't say it has
anything to recommend it. If you've never been to a Latin American city
before, you might find it interesting just to walk around and see how
they do things. Otherwise, I would spend as little time there as
possible. It didn't strike me as particularly unsafe or dirty--though I
used to live in Lima, Peru, so my standards are a little off--but not
particularly interesting, either.

SJ has a few things of interest, and areas that can be entertaining
for a day or so....
There's a few good museums. The children's museum is made out of the
prison, which was a real "hell hole", and the art museum in Sabana
Park, which used to be the airport are worth a visit...
It's fun to hang out in the sidewalk cafe of the Grand Hotel across
from the opera house downtown too, and the central market is
interesting!

Visit the Blue Marlin Bar, one of the city's most famous whore pick up bars
in the Hotel Del Ray. Very nice and classy place with great food. Fun
watching the action. Strictly as a spectator.

The "Blue Marlin Bar" is always good for a floor show of watching the
world's oldest profession... Years ago, the "hot place" for meeting
whores was the "Key Largo", across from Morzan Park. It was only open
at night. Next door was an elementary school!
I don't know if it's still open, but the National Crime Museum was
interesting to visit. They had a child's head in a a block of resin,
that someone had cut off with a machete, lots of dope stuff,
counterfeit money, abortion equipment, and plenty of guns you could
handle!
They also had some extremely graphic documentation of crocodile
attacks, with victims being yanked out of crocodiles by the cops! Not
sure exactly what laws were being broken, but they certainly were some
ghastly pictures!
