American DVDs are set for North America and may not be watchable
on many machines in Europe.

Just shop online; you'll get better deals.

Why?

The prices there are likely to be the highest.

Should you use the mailblocks package and expect a response from me,
you should preauthorize the dissensoftware.com domain.

I very rarely bother responding to challenge/response systems,
especially those from irresponsible companies.

I don't think I know anyone in Europe who has a DVD player that isn't
multi-region or at least region-free.

When a friend of mine from Australia was in the States a
few months ago, she made it a point to visit the Virgin
Megastore at Walt Disney World to stock up on DVDs and
CDs. So you might want to try the one in Chicago.

In the Loop, there's Tower Records on Wabash St. just south of Adams.
The elevated railroad goes right past it. There's another Tower on the
North Side, on Clark Ave., I think. Someone else has already mentioned
the Virgin Megastore which is on Michigan Ave. just north of the river.

However, prices tend to be high at both Tower and Virgin, by U.S.
standards. You'd probably save money by ordering via the Web from places
like dvdempire.com. I've heard that even Tower's Web site
towerrecords.com often has lower prices than their own stores. You have to
pay for shipping, but you don't have to pay the sales tax, probably about
8% for Chicago, as you do when you buy in person.

When I buy DVDs in person, I look first in large electronics "superstores"
such as Best Buy and Circuit City, because they have lower prices than
most other stores, except the on-line ones. I don't know if there are
any such stores close to downtown Chicago; they're usually out in the
suburbs and hard to reach by public transportation. Also, they're good
for mass-market movies and TV productions, but not very good for
specialist material such as opera.

I've never bought a DVD, but I can provide addresses for the stores
already mentioned:

Tower Records, Wabash at Adams. Under Wabash/Adams Brown Line station;
one block from Red Line Jackson station.

Tower Records, Clark at Belden. On 22 or 36 bus lines.

Virgin Megastore, Michigan at Ohio. On 146 or 151 bus lines; two blocks
from Red Line Grand station.

Best Buy, Marcey at Clybourn. One block northwest of Red Line
North/Clybourn station.

Circuit City, North at Sheffield. Two blocks west of Red Line
North/Clybourn station.
