Tell me about Insanbul
I agree that staying in Sultanahmet is the best idea. And you can get rooms for
much less than 50 Euros. Here's the best web site I found for Turkish travel in general, including a good Istanbul guide: http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/index.html I'd highly recommend the Eyewitness series travel book for Istnabul published by DK Publishing. There's a top 10 must-see section at the beginning of the book, and I'd highly recommend doing all the things listed. The most fun my wife and I had were on the Bosphorus cruise and in the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar. And while there's lots to do and see in Istanbul, I do have a caution for you: Be careful about all the extremely friendly acting men who will approach you (harass is more accurate) constantly. They typically act like all they want to do is strike up a conversation with you, but believe me when I say every single one of them wants to sell you something. Do not let any of them guide you around because they always want something in the end, whether it be a direct payment for their services or to take you to a bunch of stores. The merchants (especially the carpet salemen) are absolutely relentless. After a couple days my wife and I learned to never make eye contact with any of these people and to never, ever stop when they start talking because they'll never let you go again. When approached by them just give them a smile and a quick "no thank you." It's annoying to have to behave like this when all you really want to do is take a nice leisurely stroll, but the reality is that you simply have to do it or they'll never leave you alone. But don't let this scare you. Istanbul is unique because of its ancient traditions sites mixed with lots of modernity and westernization. It took us some getting used to after more traditional western European destinations, but I'm very glad I went. Feel free to email me with any specific questions and I'll be happy to help you as much as I can. Enjoy your trip! |
