Japan - Why so few Western type of hotels in Japan?
Greetings! Japan is a very advanced country. As I am reading travel
books about Japan, I am surprised that so few western type of hotels (Holiday Inns Chain, Hilton groups, Day's Inn etc)are in Japan. Just curious. With thanks. |

In article .com,
says... Greetings! Japan is a very advanced country. That's not necessarily a bad thing. -- Alfred Molon http://www.molon.de - Photos of Asia, Africa and Europe |

Maybe you ought to think about chucking out those guide books, as there are *loads* of western-style hotels all over Japan. -- Dave Fossett Saitama, Japan |

There are plenty of Western style hotels, just most of them are not run by those particular American hotel chains. Just off the top of my head, there's a Hyatt, Four Seasons and Intercontinental, and many Western-style hotels run by Japanese chains like the New Otani and Akasaka Prince, Shinjuku Prince, etc. series of hotels. Most hotels will be Western style - unless a hotel specifically calls itself a ryokan it's usually Western style. During Japan's 1980s economic boom, a very large number of hotels were built in Tokyo and other major Japanese cities, and as a result many of them now have high vacancy rates. So American hotel chains which didn't already enter Japan in the 1980s have no reason to open there now. BTW, why would you want to stay in a Day's Inn or Holiday Inn in Japan? There are much more interesting and distinctive places to stay, even if you don't want a Japanese style hotel where you sleep on a mat on the floor and have to follow certain rules. |
