You spent more than half a sec typing that though, and it's the time you
spend searching for posts to feign outrage at that Johannes was pointing
out. You do spend an unnatural amount of time responding to posts you
claim no interest in.

Now I can proud myself of having tickled an actual response out of It.
And a seriously long one, too, e-i-g-h-t-e-e-n words! Jesus, how cool is
that? I don't know

This is a rant- I'm not really seeking advice.

At Lisbon airport today, I had an hour to spare so thought I'd get on
the wifi there. With 5 different companies to choose from (through the
same ANA portal) not a single one worked. Vodafone kept on complaining
about my post code not being correct, another company (I forget them all
now) couldn't connect with its server for payment, another only accepted
visa if from Brazil (!), otherwise MC or Amex (neither of which I have.)
If I'd had a Portuguese mobile, no problem, I could have sent an SMS as
payment, but I didn't. I imagine a lot of people using the service
don't. Bizarre...

I wish the EU would cut roaming data charges to 10p per MB, that would
seem OK to me, and I'd use my MiFi a lot more than I did. The upside was
that elsewhere in Lisbon and Braga (where I spent most of the time
working) it was relatively easy to find free wifi... even many of the
buses in Lisbon have it now. It just seems stupid that I pay £15 a month
for 3GB of data on pay as you go in the UK, and the minute I go to
another EU country I'm charged 200 times that.

Italy is the worst regarding internet access for foreigners.
You have to turn in your passport, hey make a copy of it and record
every site you visit.
Unsecured wifi is prohibited.

Yes, I remember being a little irked that I needed my passport in Parma
to access their wifi- I didn't have it on me...

That said, on our last trip to Italy I found it relatively easy to get
unsecured wifi in a number of cities, Milan, Lucca, Sienna, Modena. Even
just walking along the street in Viareggio... I'm talking about using it
on my ipod which is obviously far more portable (and more discreet) than
a laptop etc.

It used to be that home wifi units in the UK came unsecured 'out of the
box' and it was quite easy to get signals then- I'm aware that there are
legal issues here of course... now, the vast majority are secured by
default.

As I noted in another post, most areas I went in Belgrade city centre
had free wifi.

Is wifi availble in every McDonalds in Italy like it is in the
Netherlands, the one time home of Nigerian letter writers?

I never tried to pick up a signal outside one, but when I did once in
Valencia, it needed a code... Italian McD's might ask for ID... I don't
know.
