Default [OT] Best and Worst American Cities according to Europeans

Europeans, particularly Italians and French, besides living in two of the
most beautiful countries in the world, are known for their good taste when
it comes to quality of life (food, clothes, cars, night life, weather,
women, etc). According to a recent poll these are the impressions of
Europeans about American cities.

5 Best (the least American cities):

Miami
San Diego
NYC
San Francisco
Boston

5 Worst (typical American cities):

Houston
Dallas
Pittsburgh
Detroit
Cleveland

Most Overrated (these cities are not necessarily bad, just plain overrated
by Americans who have no standards):

New Orleans
Austin
Los Angeles
Chicago
Las Vegas

Do Americans agree?

I agree. I would add Philadelphia to "worst"-- just for the horrible
food and sickening air quality alone.

Las Vegas is a complete waste of time.

Chicago IS over-rated, but then I'm from NYC area so it seemed never
that great to begin with.

You expect L.A. to be bad, so I don;t see that as "over-rated".

I speak for only myself. I have never taking such ratings seriously.
What does "best" mean? What "standards" do Europeans have that are so
much better than those of Americans? What is a "standard" anyway in the
area of deciding which American city one enjoys visiting?

I have been to Miami, San Diego (briefly), NYC (many times), San
Francisco, Boston, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.
In fact, tomorrow morning, three friends and I depart from Philadelphia
on a one week visit to Las Vegas.

Of the cities I have been to on that list, I have had a great time on
each visit. Probably my least favorite is New Orleans, but I still
enjoyed my one visit there about ten years ago.

I think its possible ot enjoy visiting any city; its just a matter of
finding something unique and interesting to do on your visit. Saying one
city is better than another is silly because we all have our own taste
and interests. I have been to Las Vegas many times and I definitely
don't think its overrated. If some people consider my taste sub-par. So
be it. I couldn't care less.

Philadelphia is one of the few US cities with a significant history,
and has some great museums. And it does have good restaurants - do you
think a cheese steak sandwich is the only thing you can get there?

Las Vegas is a complete waste of time.

It is the best place in the world for gambling. If you don't gamble,
then don't bother going there.

Chicago IS over-rated, but then I'm from NYC area so it seemed never
that great to begin with.

It is an interesting city architecturally, and has a thriving cultural
scene, and is good for live music also. I wouldn't make it my first
choice of US cities to visit, but I can see visiting if you are in the
general area, have a multiple-flight airpass or are making a
cross-country trip.

You expect L.A. to be bad, so I don;t see that as "over-rated".

It's possible to have a rewarding trip to LA. The famous places
(Hollywood, Beverly Hills, etc.) are disappointing, but if you have a
car and know where to go there are some worthwhile places, for example
interesting immigrant neighborhoods.

I couldn't disagree more about Philadelphia and Las Vegas. Like anything
else, its a matter of personal taste, but anyone who can't find
enjoyable food in Philadelphia is simply not looking. Philly has some of
the most well respected restaurants in the country such as Le Bec Fin
and Sussanah Foo's. My favorite restaurant in Philly is Ralph's which is
the oldest family owned Italian restaurant in the country. The food
there is fantastic and prices are reasonable.

As for Las Vegas, its definitely a unique city, but to say its a waste
of time is silly. If anything, Las Vegas makes a great base of
operations to explore the national and state parks in that area such as
Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, as well as Hoover Dam and the Lake
Meade area and the Grand Canyon.

The thing is, you have to be *prepared* to enjoy the American culture
for what it is to enjoy American cities. Do some research, and know
what you are going for----don't expect ****ing EuroDisney when you come
over here. The exact very much same can be said for Americans who do
the Content and then complain. What the **** where you expecting?

Since I've never been to Miami, I'll withhold judgment. However, I've
always thought it was rather crime ridden. San Diego gets a strong pass for
its climate, but I haven't been there in 30 years.

However, I think Pittsburgh and Chicago get a bum rap here. Pittsburgh is a
nice smaller major city with active neighborhoods. Chicago strikes me as
sort of Manhattan light: it has the lights, the buildings, the traffic, but
not quite the edge. I've liked it the three times that I've been there.

Agree about NYC, Boston and SF. All are unique cities worth visiting. Also
each of these do not require a car to get around.

I hate Las Vegas but that's a personal thing. I just don't go for phony
glitz, especially when I live 3 hours from NYC which has real glitz.
