The thread above on Wednesday, 11 July 2007 2:44 AM - viz - Subject:
Problems with B&B in Osoyoos BC - anyone else have this happen?

is packed full with vituperative, racist, paranoid, anti-social stuff!!

Enough to put any sane person right off visiting!!

I hope it's not reflective of the USA or Canada in reality!

Check with Alan, also from Australia, who posted (I believe) in that
thread and frequently posts here.

My experience: most of the people I encounter while traveling in the US
are at least pleasant, often very friendly and helpful. This and other
NG's draw the lowest of the low (along with several more reasonable
examples of the species). Try a visit and believe what you see, not
what you read.

sechumlib - I'm in this ng because we're going 'leaf-peeping' in the New
England area in September/October (and spending some time in Boston).
Arriving in Atlanta in September, picking up a car there - and off we go.
BnBs - which we've used and enjoyed in Canada and Ireland were going to be
one of our accommodation options. Probably still will be - but I'm surprised
at the latent anger and hostility evident in that one thread!!!

There is no great hostility around American B&Bs...that thread just
attracted a few people who like to "express themselves." Most US B&Bs are
more expensive than in Europe because they are fancier than motels/cheap
hotels. They are usually a good example of the local culture, offering food,
rooms, and recreation reflective of the area.

If you have any questions about the Atlanta area, please let me know.

Check the places listed at http://selectregistry.com/. They are
largely B&B's, although some inns and similar places are also listed. We
have stayed at several, and have never been disappointed.

I'm also surprised at the antipathy toward B&B's shown lately in this
NG. I think certain people are uninformed and/or ignorant about them.
We frequently stay in them and find them very satisfactory.

Just one suggestion for the first part of your drive; make
sure you include the Blue Ridge parkway when you can. We
used it as our planning centreline, always coming back to it
and making side forays to towns and cities for most of the
trip between Georgia and DC.

On accommodation, learn how to use Hotwire, Expedia and, if
they'll let you, Priceline.

The anger and hostility were mainly centred around one
individual who is an obvious troll. Those posts managed to
get under the skin of some others, which was the trolls
intent.

However, I suspect it can be pretty jammed on weekends in leaf-peeping
season. I know that's true of the Skyline Drive, which is just the
parkway's extension on the north end.

Can't answer that; it was just about deserted for most of
our trip, which was in late March early April that year. Not
leaf season, but still wonderful scenery in parts.

To the OP -- if it works with your plans, check this place on the Parkway:
http://www.pisgahinn.com/ It's not a B&B per se; the Park Service runs it.
The setting is magnificent; the food at the restaurant is great (at least
last time I was there), and the prices are reasonable. Reserve early,
though.
