Now, although you are coming to the end:

The months of June, July, and August are closed to all oyster harvest in
Dixie, Levy, and Wakulla counties. The rest of the state is closed to all
oyster harvest during July, August, and September.

May 23 is too late for oysters for more reasons than the end of oyster
harvest. In general, oysters don't taste as good (they get mushy
during spawning season) and are more dangerous eaten raw in the warmer
months.

Oyster season is really November-April.

We were in Key West two weeks ago and I found excellent oysters and
the best deal, I think, at Crabby Dicks on Duval Street for $4.99 a
doz.

Always, as far as I have been able to tell in going there for 13
years. But go to Crabby Bills on 511 Green Street (Not Crabby Dick's
on Duval). They have $2.99 / dozen oysters on the 1/2 shell and 2-4-1
beers during Happy Hour (It made me happy!) You can order a doz and a
beer, then order another doz and get the 2nd, free beer to go with
them. For a 10-dollar bill you've eaten and left a tip.

Not so in mid April 2004. I have been going to Key West since 1966 and
have frequented Crabby Bill's before. This time the best he would do
was $7.99/dozen even at happy hour, but he is much closer to the Hog's
Breath. Maybe your cruise goes to Isla Margarita, Venezuela, where I
ate oysters as fast as the little beach guy could shuck them for $.10
each including tip.
If you are prior Navy check six.

If it's off season, they are probably fresh-frozen imported from
somewhere outside Florida's waters. Half Shell Raw Bar, A&B Lobster
House, and Alfonso's will inform you that they are fresh-frozen when you
oder them off season. They won't even serve Stone Crab Claws
fresh-frozen off season. Places in Miami South Beach will. The Stone
Crab Claws loose some of their sweetness and become a little mealy when
fresh-frozen.
