I am sure that people are opening Beijing Hotels as part of a long term
stratgy. It is likely to become a more popular tourist and business
destination in the next decade and the city is (apparently) short of hotel
rooms for this purpose. Though, I have to say, I think that the biggest
problem is in the Mid price range, not at the top.

This is true for many places in Asia. Shortsighted owners figure they've
paid the same price for land, concrete etc. and decide they should set room
rates as high as possible to recover the startup costs quicker. It doesn't
work as a long term strategy as Vietnam and India are discovering.

It's the same just about everywhere in the Far East, except Goa for some
reason.

It's either a cockroach infested flop house for bugger all a night or a
marble floored palace for a small fortune, breakfast extra...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

I agree, except that in China it's even worse because officially, the
cockroach infested flop house cannot be let to non Chinese. Whether this
rule is actually enforced by the authorities or respected by the Hotels, I
have no idea (I've only stayed in the Palaces - when someone else was
paying).

I struck a few in between. The best, by far, for a traveler
like myself in India was the Arya Niwas in Jaipur.

Not just a backpacker hotel, although there were several
staying there and it had that laid-back style, and not just
for the businessman or families, although they were
represented too.

My only peeve was that the restaurant was vegetarian only;
but so were many others.

Oh they exist. But they are in the minority.

And the issue in some countries is the big difference between the rack rate
and the internate rate. If you know exactly where you are going and for how
long you can pre book a good quality Beijing (or other major city) for about
80 dollars a night, turn up at the door and they want 300.
