Default Fiumicino to Central Rome

I will be arriving at the Rome, Italy, air port terminal and then spend
4 days in Rome before a cruise out of Citiavecchi. What is the most
economical as well as convenient way to get from Fiumicino terminal to
my hotel in the old part of Rome?

One person has suggested the train to Rome Termini at very low cost and
then cab to the hotel. Another person I know is using a van service for
much more money. What is anyone's experience?

You've certainly set a challenge for yourself. I often find that
"economical" and "convenient" are incompatible. More important, I think
you have to decide how much of a challenge you want to take on after
arriving in Rome from an overnight flight.

Please remember the Rome Termini is pickpocket central. The line to load
into taxis is another pickpocket magnet. I would not recommend you go
through Termini if you have more than one piece of luggage per person
and will be too tired to be super-vigilant.

Having warned you about Termini with lots of luggage, I can equally
assure you that the subway, including changes at Termini, is wonderfully
convenient for the remainder of your trip as long as you use common sense.

Specifically, use a neck wallet or money belt, and keep any totes or day
packs in front of you with a protective arm clamped against the pack.
Finally, be alert to people close to you.

First, kudos for planning a stay in Rome before your Cruise. Most people do not
and see nothing but a skyline in the distance.

The train, which runs frequently, will be about $16.00 for 2 people as I
remember, plus the cost of the Taxi from Termini to the Hotel. A shared Van will
be $60 to $80 for 2, and a Taxi will be about $100.00.

If you take the train, it is a long hike at the Airport just to get to the
station, then the train from the Airport stops at the back of Termini and it is
another long hike to get up to the front of the Terminal to get a Taxi to the
Hotel. Do not even attempt to take the Metro with luggage.

A shared Van will drop you at the Hotel but it can be very crowded and there may
be several stops before you.

A Taxi will zoom you directly to your Hotel and even handle your luggage for
you. Just be sure you confirm the rate up front and that it is a licensed Taxi.
Picking it up at the Airport should be no problem as the Police are very visible
there and the pretenders stay away. This is the best choice as you will be
tired, confused, and have a lot of luggage to worry about. Pay the money and get
the peace of mind. Once you are safely ensconced in your Hotel by all means take
the Metro and the Busses. It is a real adventure and an essential part of the
total Rome experience. Hopefully your Agent had the foresight to select a Hotel
near a convienient Bus Line and Metro Station.

As an alternative, some Hotels do offer a pickup service, usually for a small
fee and sometimes even free. Ask your Agent to check with the Hotel to see if
any arrangements can be made.

Bon Voyage and have a great visit to Rome and a great Cruise also.

I used a shared Van from central Rome [Piazza Navona] to FCO airport
in June 2005 and cost was 26 Euro for 1 + 6 Euro for each additional
person in your party. So total was 32 Euro or about $40. Price is same
from FCO to Rome. I booked it on the internet at

http://www.airportshuttle.it/

Service was in a Ford Econoline van and took about 1/2 hour. From
my recollection, the difference in $ between a taxi to the Termini
& 2 train tickets wasn't worth it to me.

Thanks for the info. Yes, there is a big difference between the train cost and a
taxi. But sometimes it is worth that extra cost. Your shared van seems to be a
happy solution however.

Hi Cal,

IMHO, a taxi ride in Rome is an E Ticket and not to be missed. I
remember the first time I took my parents to Italy, and the many times
the cab drove over the sidewalk to avoid traffic. Dad loved it, Mom
just kept crossing herself G.

You are so right Howie .......

A few years ago we went to Rome with another couple, dear friends we have known
forever. At the Airport I winked at my wife, she winked back, and I said "Ray,
you have a bad knee so why don't you ride up front". Talk about white knuckles,
he nearly broke his wrists he was holding on so tight.

There was a police car in the fast lane with blue lights and siren going. We
passed him using the inside shoulder like he was standing still.

Thanks to all of you who have given me your experiences and
recommendations. Seems that the most sensible suggestion is the shared
van from Fiumicino to my hotel in Piazza Campo de'Fiori.

I intend to take cabs around when I am there and not shelping luggage. I
am very experience with cabs in Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and other SE
Asia places. Can't be more exciting in Rome than those places.

I am duly warned about termini.

Karen,

I hope that I remembered to thank you for your post here recommending
Context Rome to provide us with limo service from the airport to our hotel.

You've picked a great location to stay while in Rome.

I intend to take cabs around when I am there and not shelping luggage. I
am very experience with cabs in Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and other SE
Asia places. Can't be more exciting in Rome than those places.

Unless you have physical problems that interfere with walking, I'd
really encourage you to do that rather than taking taxis. Sure, you
might want to take a taxi from your hotel to the Colossseum or the Domus
Aurea, but you're so centrally located and there are so many interesting
nooks, crannies, and streets in Rome that walking is the way to go.

Besides -- and I can't emphasize this enough -- my husband and I make no
concessions to dieting when we're in Italy. Gelato. Pasta. Wine.
Multi-course dinners. Walking is an essential part of our weight control
strategy.

I am duly warned about termini.

Having warned you about Termini -- or any other destination where
tourists congregate -- I also want to repeat my reassurances. There are
so many people at these places, that pickpockets do not have to work
very hard to find easy targets. Use common sense precautions and you can
ride the subway, buses, or visit tourist sites with complete confidence
that the pickpockets will avoid you. You'll be too much of a challenge.

Anything else we can do for you?

Karen Selwyn
