April 6, 1968: HemisFair Opens
The Chief Instigator wrote: "Fred Goodwin, CMA" writes: I vaguely recall visiting San Antonio at some point in the late 60s (probably after the actual fair) and seeing the Tower of the Americas, the Alamo, etc. and being awed by it all (I was probably an 8th or 9th grader at the time). I saw it in the last couple of weeks of 1966, thanks to a great-aunt from the old country of southwest Virginia who had come to Houston to spend the holidays with us, and was determined to see the Alamo. At least the Alamo hasn't changed all that much since then. ;-) Although it has little connection to the structure or setting of the battle. The small outpost in an open setting has been stripped of most of it's buildings with the remainder massively modified and choked within an urban setting. Now I live in San Antonio, and it seems like many of the locals take it all for granted, if they think about it at all. I can understand at least some of that, as many of us Houstonians had a similar attitude towards the Astrodome once the novelty wore off... |
