If you sign up with their Krissflyer promotion, you can log-in and choose
which seats you want up to 48 hours before the flight. I did this on all 4
legs of my return trip to AKL. Depending on your number of passengers there
are 3 or 4 rows at the rear which only have 2 seats at the windows which
appear to have extra room.

According to their website (and my experience) you can only request a
specific seat for 1st or Business class on the web.
In economy you can only request a window, aisle or middle.
See
http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/app/...atRequest.html
If there is a way to do it for economy too I ould like to know how too! I
just tried and failed.
There are indeed some 2-seat rows on 747s near the back. Quite near the
toilets but OK.

The website shows the seat number layouts for each flight.
On the phone I have requested specific seat numbers for economy too, but
maybe that depends on the kindness of the SQ staff.

Our last Singapore Airlines flight was a long time ago (1995/1996), so
things may have changed, but we could *request* (i.e. not demand)
specific seats (in economy) and got them, both to and from Oz. Same more
recently (2000, 2002 and 2003) with British Aiways and Qantas.

Note however that we booked via a (good) travel agency, i.e. not via
some general website and also not via the airlines' websites.

We *prepare* ourselves via the *web*, i.e. find out which flights are
available at which prices, and then *book* via a *travelagent*. Works
every time, i.e. much better service at (effectively) the same price (we
only pay a small booking fee, some AU$ 20-25 per person.
