"JamesStep" wrote in message news:20041216111116.11961.00001694@mb- If you're looking for hardcore, scary rides, there are several web sites that have detailed descriptions and comparisons of roller coasters at the various theme parks around the country, and you might find that useful. Indeed - just that the US is so massive and we dont really know anything about it - in the UK I could probably get anywhere using the Road and Train system prety easily! Most of the places will probably be way too far for us to get to from NY anyway. |

On a totally unrelated note - how far is Washington DC from NY - too far to
go check out all the political sites? For some weird reason I wanna go see the Lilcoln Memorial after watching Mr Smith Goes to Washington, LOL |

Part of the problem is that most theme parks are located away from city
centers, and the US doesn't have public transport away from City Centers, generally. Transport just doesn't go to theme parks. The combination of Mass Transit and Theme park limits you, but here are some possibilities. Six Flags Adventure World, outside Washington DC. You can take a low fare flight or a train to DC, then take the metro out to Largo and catch a cab the 5 or 6 miles. Stay in Washington for the night before and after. Busch Gardens, Williamsburg Virginia. Again, you probably have to take a train (or a bus), but once in Williamsburg you can get a taxi to the thene park which is outside town. Six Flags Great Adventure should have a similar way to get there if you have the cash for a taxi from Trenton or wherever. Hopefully someone in that area will respond with similar information. (I live south of Washington DC, so I don't know NJ public transit.) Julie mo wrote: "Juliana L Holm" wrote in message ... Six Flags Great Adventure is probably an hour from New York City. I am not sure if it is reachable via public transport, though. Julie Wouls there be any others that are closer (maybe within 2 or 3 hours) that we could go to on a different day. No doubt if we end up going to NY over florida we will spend all the other days sightseeting anyway.. -- Julie ********** Check out my Travel Pages (non-commercial) at http://www.dragonsholm.org/travel.htm |

DC is three to five hours from NY, depending on your choice of transport. Trains are going to run three hours (planes more, since you need to figure in getting to the airport from city center (and back) and time going through security) Busses are closer to 5 hours. Both can get you from city center to city center, and public transport is good in both towns. I can answer questions about DC, having lived nearby for a lot of years (and having worked in town most of that time). For example, if you enjoy roller coasters but can't decide whether you should visit Disney or Universal Studios (or whatever), a site that gives a comparison of the coasters at each might be helpful. (I live south of Washington DC, so I don't know NJ public transit.) According to the Six Flags Great Adventure home page: http://www.sixflags.com/parks/greata...tservices.html .... PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION .... NJ Transit offers bus service from New York City, Newark, Camden & .... Philadelphia to Six Flags Great Adventure. For the bus operating .... schedule call New Jersey Transit at (800) 772-2222 in New Jersey, .... 800-626-7433 outside New Jersey or 800-772-2287 for Hearing .... Impaired. Given that, I would recommend staying in New York instead of Washington DC, as New York also has beach access and lots of other activities for young people. The best beaches are probably along the NJ shore, although Jones Beach is quite nice and a lot closer. The NJ beaches are accessible by public transportation, but it takes quite a while to get to the best ones. There is train service and express bus service to Atlantic City, which is a dreary city, but has a decent beach and also has casinos. Most people go there for the casinos, and skip the beach. Some bus fares are very cheap, as they are offered just to lure you into the casinos. -- Barbara Vaughan My email address is my first initial followed by my last name at libero dot it. |
