There used to be a wonderful, quiet area on one of the cabin decks at the
stern of the old Noordam & Nieuwe Amsterdam. Very secluded, only about a
dozen deckchairs, and it seems most passengers weren't aware of it or
weren't interested in quiet seclusion. Great for a nap, reading a book,
dozing in the sun or whatever. About 1/2 of it was shaded.
Then they started piping the music in....
sigh

There was a similar area on Deck 8 on the Norwegian Dream and Wind.

I think most ships have a few quite places where people can sit and relax
and watch the ocean (or people) go by... but you might have to look for
them.

Rock climbing walls. Self leveling pool tables. Flow riders. Bowling
lanes. Ice skating rinks. Specialty restaurants. These and others are
all innovations that have appeared on cruise ships in the past ten years.

So... a simple question. If you were designing a cruise ship, what new
"gimmick", feature, program or attraction would you like to see included?

I'll start us off.....

A roller coaster. Imagine a roller coaster that roars around the top
decks of the ship and in one area... soars out over the water, 15 stories
above the sea.

How about a top deck "adults only" pool area, WITH music. I've found that
if I want to be childless, I am off somewhere with no steel drums.

Why not just bring your own iPod?

Hard to have a conversation, when you're plugged in. And, it kind of
isolates you from your surroundings - some might say iPods are anti-
social!. Hearing music as ambient sound vs. hearing music as the only
sound - there's a big difference between the two.

Well if you are going to talk about gimmick features that could be
advertised it will have to be something as spectacular as that and not
merely a quiet place to sit or a moving walkway or a movie theatre.

The only thing I could think of under that criteria (and I haven't
really been able to figure out how they could do it) is horseback
riding. Maybe they could just have a bucking bull thing like some
bars in TX.

And if you can water ski off the back of the ship, how about also
parasailing off the back of the ship?

Maybe along side of the flow rider, they could have a stationary lap
pool (one where you swim against the water going by you while you are
basically stationary instead of swimming to the end and turning around
and swimming back). Might require a harness to stay in place.

I think what I'd like is the full schedule of sat TV and Tivo. But
that's not what they'd want to advertise.

Virtual reality games like they have at disneyquest. You put a helmet
on and it feels like you're inside the game.

Bungee jumping

Bring back skeet shooting off the back of the ship.

Hi Rosalie,

I believe this has already been done.

Best regards,

But for Skeet use "birds" made of dough instead of
clay! Perhaps Chocolate Chip in the morning and
Oatmeal Raisin in the afternoon.

We found a couple nice quiet places on some ships, but when other people
saw us,it was good bye to them unless you got up at 4 or 5 in the
morning, and of course you could not save them ,even to go to the john.

I'd really like the roller coaster, but they'd probably charge $50 a
ride for it.

For quiet places, I'd really like a quiet place on an upper deck,
shielded from the wind, with no lights so I could see the stars. But
everyone else seems to want bright and noisy.

Another good thing would be a large spa inside an atrium that can be
opened to the outside in good weather.

And if you can water ski off the back of the ship, how about also
parasailing off the back of the ship?

I was going to suggest that, but you beat me to it. Depending on
where you look, you can find a minimum recommended tow speed of 12 to
25 mph.

Maybe along side of the flow rider, they could have a stationary lap
pool (one where you swim against the water going by you while you are
basically stationary instead of swimming to the end and turning around
and swimming back). Might require a harness to stay in place.

Suspended over the ocean, with a clear glass bottom!

Or a "no TV, no radio, no piped-in music anywhere" section.
