Default no car insurance in NZ?

My friend says you can drive a car without insurance in NZ.
This sounds slightly crazy.
The lawyers must be having a go of it there.

If my friend in NZ is driving an un-insured car, I am I as a passanger
liable for any trouble we get into?

In NZ no iunsurance is required, Legally. Mind you running into someone
thats not very understanding and 7foot between the eyes may cause a second
think.

Third party property insurance is the least that the driver should have.

Passengers are covered by New Zealands ACC scheme. Unless your from over
seas then you will need travel insurance I think.

Passengers are not liable for any damage or injury caused by the vehicle.

(Not legal advice, juts my belief from driving 20 years there.)

Quite the opposite. Because personal injury payout is stipulated by law, and
paid from a Government Compensation Fund, lawyers don't come into it at
all - and the community saves buckets!!!

Note that it's just Personal Injury insurance that's not required. 3rd party
property and comprehensive insurance provisions and requirements are the
same as anywhere else - and about the same proportion of drivers carry these
as anywhere else.
