Russia: Europe or Asia
This issue is sometimes debated here (usually caused by some remark
about Turkey), so I sat down and counted how many Russians lived on either side of the Urals. I used the numbers from this site: http://www.world-gazetteer.com/ The distributions of districts in Europe and Asia can be seen on this map: http://home1.stofanet.dk/rorschak/russia.gif The red states are Asian and the blue states European. The result was that of a total population of 144,003,901, 109,976,452 lives in Europe (76.4%). Of a total area of 16,894,740.5 kmē, 4,126,245.9 kmē is in Europe (24.4%). |

Of a total area of 16,894,740.5 kmē, 4,126,245.9 kmē
is in Europe (24.4%). And if Asian Russia were both part of Russia and a separate country, Asian Russia would be the seventh largest country in the world, beating out India by one million square kilometers. Ten largest countries: Russia Canada China USA Brazil Australia India Argentina Kazakhstan Sudan |

country, Asian Russia would be the seventh largest country in the world, beating out India by one million square kilometers. Scratch that. I did the reverse math, duh! Try: And if Asian Russia were both part of Russia and a separate country, Asian Russia would be the SECOND largest country in the world, bigger than Canada by more than two million square kilometers. Time for more tea. Pete |
