DON'T PUT YOUR ADDRESS ON YOUR LUGGAGE TAGS. I've seen the porters
writing down names and address's of local people at airports and cruise
ports.

Having your house visited by a cop or the Pope won't stop roberies,
Alarms may scare the robbers away, but too late.

I use my office address on luggage.

I kind of hate to have my newspaper stopped. That's a lose/lose situation.

Creepy! She booked my last cruise to Panama too.
I've sometimes wondered if cutting service off to newspapers, mail, etc
might open one up to risk from unscrupulous employees. We pre-arrange for
a policeman to visit our home twice a day while we're away. On one
occasion when we forgot to hold service they brought the newspapers to the
back and left them on the deck.

Another good reason to use a reliable T/A instead of booking directly with
the cruiseline and a stranger...
We don't stop our newspaper as we only have it delivered on weekends and
with someone staying at the house, they bring it in as well as any junk
brochures or ads left on our porch as well as our mail...We have had the
same postman for many years and know him well, so if we did have to stop the
mail, I would not worry. Our Neighborhood Assn. has a program called COPS
where its members drive around the community several times a day with cell
phones and report any suspicious activity directly to the police...they have
even stopped in front of our house when the garage doors were up and then
moved on when they saw either one of us working in the area. The city police
also often canvas the area...having a son who is in law enforcement doesn't
hurt either! ;-)

That is bad. And not telling people you are going on a cruise would not
make a difference as this person had inside information.

That is why when we cruise or travel, we have set a good security alarm
system backed by battery and there is always some one staying at our
house. It is a shame that there or so many people with no scruples or
conscience. One has to always stay one step ahead and be alert to all
sorts of scams.

--Jean

And Jean, while many things are irreplaceable, we should all insure to
value and keep an inventory, perhaps a video inventory, at a different
location. It's an insult to be victim of theft, even more so to be
under-insured. If the premium is a problem a high deductable will help.

Harry Cooper

True, Harry, plus a safety box at our bank holds many of our valuables. But
photos and an inventory list of your possessions help police and your
insurance company. I just hate it when they ask for purchase price proof
when to me, it is as valuable now as when we bought it!

Another way to avoid the problem is to never have anything worth stealing.

Ermalee

Impossible, Erm! You have those TVs and computers to start with, plus things
that have sentimental value that are irreplaceable.

I guess this is a reason to book with TAs, rather than directly with
the cruise line.

Nope.

Put anything of value in my safety deposit box and inform our local
police we are going to be away, and they do keep a good check on our
property,as well as our neighbors do.

I've read that it only takes a few minutes for those who are
experienced.

When we head out for the weekend and take the dogs (dog, sigh) we
always tell at least two neighbors. We all look after each other and
take care of the papers. Mail goes in a secure box, so a weekend
isn't a problem

Cruises, Disney and Hawai'i we normally have a sitter who takes care
of the paper and mail and makes sure the house has a solid lived in
look. Since it is.

Having dogs who bark at a leaf moving across the street helps, too.

huh. I just arrange for a policeman to visit my home when I'm gone.

What does pre-arranging do for you that simply arranging doesn't get?

The policeman will be able to pre-catch any thiefs.

Yeah, and the crook's name will be enscribed on a wooden ball.
