Default Where to stay in Varanasi, India?

I will be staying a number of days in Varanasi the end of Feb or
beginning of March. Can anyone recommend a place to stay? Is lodging on
the Ghat preferable to lodging a few streets away from the Ganges?
Thanks in advance!

As far from the ghats as you can get......unless you want to breathe the smoke
of cremations & watch dead babies float by.

Oh come on, there ar eno dead babies floating around! They weight them down
with rocks so they go to the bottom

Seriously stay at the Hotel Clark Varanasi and then ride down to the ghats when
you want.
