Default ****ty exchange rate, any place in europe worth visiting?

My wife and I wanted to visit possibly Spain or Italy from here in Arizona
US,
but have been hearing horror stories about the current exchange rate.
A while back we visited California, and I really got tired of being ripped
of on everything. I can't imagine how Europe would be right now.

I was wondering if anybody might have some advice on visiting europe on
the
cheap? Stuff like renting a room with kitchen access and getting local
groceries instead of paying for restaurant meals, etc.

You have suggested the things to do. Rent an apartment ( lots of them
online), shop in supermarkets, and walk a lot.\
When I was a college student in the fifties, we hitch-hiked everywhere in
western Europe and North Africa, slept in youth hostels, bought bread and
cheese in shops, and lived wonderfully cheaply. And had a marvelous time
Note: prices higher than you are used to down on the farm are not
necessarily rip-offs. We live in Venice, where prices are among the highest
in Europe. But I am not being ripped off -- circumstances dictate the
prices.

After the exchange rate, what problems are you expecting?

Euro 5 for a half litre beer in France and Italy. That's horrific in my
book.

drink wine?

It's even more expensive. :-(

But it tastes SO much better 8-)

of course. But as the places I want to go are generally in a tourist area,
it can be a problem.

Well, often it's only a 10 minute walk into a different part of town that
makes the difference. Look were the locals go to have their lunch/dinner.
Where the people from the offices go to spend their lunch-break. That way
you can often discover nice little places to eat.

Pretty standard in London, Atlanta, New York, and elsewhere.

but not in small village pubs in UK.

Nor in pubs in London for that matter. £4 would be considered quite
expensive- you will certainly pay that much for a "premium" beer, and
prices in restaurants will be higher on the whole, but £4 is not an
average price for a pint in London- I think it's more like £2.50-3.
Around here it's closer to £2.

Before David asks, have you thought of moving to Treviso.

The food's better there too.

Exactly. Have you watched Francesco da Mosta on BBC.

Not since he complained about the traffic in Rome while driving around
in his alfa romeo spider, no.
