I'm planning a trip driving from Los Angeles to New York City, I live in
the UK. I've checked out flights and car hire but I could do with some
advice.

How long would a fairly relaxed journey with time enough to detour
slightly take? I was planning on three weeks. Has anyone done a similar
journey?

I don't know what I should check out in particular. I would like to see
some sights that are a little different that the usual tourist traps.
Any advice?

Three weeks sounds like an ample time to meander across the country and I
agree with the other poster that it's best to avoid most of the Interstate
Highways as you will miss a lot of scenery and Americana. Gasoline is the
most expensive in San and the least expensive in Texas, Wyoming and Michigan.
A good cross country route would be U.S. Highway 50 with a few side trips to
places that interest you. Bon voyage. KM

Actually gasoline is usually less expensive in Georgia & South Carolina
than in Texas. FFM

Really? I didn't realize that. It's been a long time since I bought gas in
South Carolina and have relatives in Georgia, so you'd think I would have
noticed the gas prices, but, alas I don't recall. KM
