Advice on how long it will take me to drive from SF to Santa Monica
Can anyone please advise me on how long it will take for me and my wife to drive from SF to Santa Monica using the coast road as much as possible we will be travalling in early August 2004 and I was hopping to do it in 1 day if possible. Any advice welcome as this is our first trip to the East Coast. -- Posted via http://britishexpats.com |

If all you want to do is *get there*, then why not just take the Interstate/Freeway? To enjoy the trip, take 2 days. Don't forget, Hearst Castle is on the way - not to be missed. And I recommend booking a tour in advance if you don't want to wait 4-5 hours for a space. Advice on how long it will take me to drive from SF to SantaMonica
I've driven from San Jose to Orange County in one day a dozen or more
times. I would usually stop several times to take photos, eat etc. Driving from Monterey to Morro Bay you will only average about 40mph so it is a bit slow, but the view is worth it. I would plan on arriving at Samta Monica about 9PM to avoid the LA afternoon traffic and then stopping in Santa Barbara and/or Malibu. SF to Santa Barbara is more like a bit over 500 km (330 miles) and taking nine hours would mean some stopping along the way. ************* DAVE HATUNEN ) ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps * |

Any advice welcome as this is our first trip to the East Coast. It's feasible but if you rush it you'll miss out on the beauty of the scenery you'll be travelling through. If you ahve all day to get from SF to Santa Barbara you'll have time to see the scenery. Assuming you can actually see the scneery: August is the season of coastal fog. While one can't fully enjoy Hwy-1 in only one day, one can still enjoy it. Unless, of course, it's foggy and then the Big Sur stretch can be hell. Oh, and don't bother with Hwy-1 on the stretch through Lompoc; US-101 is the better route there. Ron Remember though that the driver is supposed to stay on the road and not look at the scenery. You will be driving on the drop off side & it's a drop. FFM |

Any advice welcome as this is our first trip to the East Coast. I assume you meant "West Coast" :-) My advice: do not do it in one day. The drive down the Big Sur is magnificent and should not (actually cannot) be rushed. Do an overnight in the San Simeon / Cambria area. (Even better is to do this with two overnights, one in Monterey / Carmel and the second in San Simeon / Cambria.) If you must do the trip in one day, don't take the coast road. Ben Brosgol |

Advice on how long it will take me to drive from SF to Santa Monica
Ben has a good point. And I'll add to what someone else mentioned.
You will find traffic jams as you leave SF, probably until you get south of San Jose or so. And you will run into traffic in LA, probably starting as early as 3 pm (and I hope you aren't traveling on a Friday). The heavy traffic will be hard to avoid unless you depart SF very early in the morning. LA traffic will continue until 7 pm or so. You can drive inland very fast, but it isn't scenic. I suppose you could travel down the coast for the first half of the journey, and then go a bit inland for speed. And you might want to have dinner before entering LA, so as to join the traffic later in the day. (And I'm a little unsure that you can get from SF to LA and still stop at San Simeon.)
