EASYJET vs British Air
Stromer2 wrote:
I need to fly from London to Geneva in June. I have asked questions about various aspects of Easyjet and now need to make a decision. BA fare is 78 GBP from Heathrow and Easyjet is 48 GBP from Luton. So BA is 62.5% more expensive than Easyjet. Add to this the fares to get on and off the airports (both). Then decide how much your subjective feeling of BA being "more serious" is worth in GBP (and take into account that this cannot be an objective criterium) and make your decision. I've never flown with EasyJet but a lot with Ryanair. I assume there are no big differences. And therewith there are no big differences to BA either: Punctuality? When I'm going on leisure I don't care about being late an hour. But then I have only been twice late with Ryanair: one delay was due to a thunderstorm going down in Frankfurt-Hahn and I was glad they circled until this was cleared, and the other delay was due to a snowstorm in Stansted two weeks ago. Food? When I go by car I prepare some sandwiches, so I can do likewise going by aircraft, right? Seats? Low-Fare carriers are even better in this respect: If you prefer to seat in the front you have to care for showing up early, in BA etc carriers these seats are reservated to 1st classers! You know what you can do with the 30 GBP? Buy me a Ryanair round-trip ticket from Karlsruhe to Stansted! Jost -- He who opens the windows invites the bugs in |

EASYJET vs British Air
Thanks for the reply:
I will be staying in London (Victoria area) and will either be taking the train to Luton or the tube to Heathrow. I need to fly out of London in the afternoon and return to London in the evening The total costs are as follows: LHR-GVA on BA = 78.4+7.4(tube) = 85.8 GBP LUT-GVA on EJ = 41+20.8(train)+4(credit card) =65.8 GBP The trans port times are about the same. Thus, I will save 20 GBP on EJ. Not much, but I like the idea of going out of a small airport(Luton). Thanks, Rick |

Thameslink does not go anywhere near Victoria. On the other hand, there is a perfectly functional bus, operated by Green Line, that goes straight to Luton from Victoria, 7.50 one-way, 8.50 roundtrip if I remember correctly. BTW, Luton is LTN, not LUT. |

Rick: As Hilary has pointed out, if you're near Victoria, Gatwick is a good option with frequent direct trains to the airport from London Victoria station - you literally step off the train, up the escalator, and you're in the South terminal (which is the one EasyJet uses). There's a flight to Geneva at 1150 and a return leaving Geneva at 1850. If you're making a day trip that doesn't give you a lot of time in Geneva, though. Fares: for June 14 (picked at random): GBP 43.40 + 4 creditcard + train (could be as low as GBP 8.30 according to www.thetrainline.com, worst case 16.00) = GBP 55.70 (min) 63.40 (max) (There are several train operating companies from London to Gatwick, these fares are from South Central trains who appear to be cheapest - journey takes just 38 minutes. See http://www.southcentraltrains.co.uk/ for more info. If you're not familiar with the way trains work in the UK now it can be rather bewildering! A ticket sold by company X may or may not be valid for travel on a train by company Y etc.. but in any case South Central run Victora to Gatwick every 15 minutes) That's the option I would go for in your situation - MUCH easier than getting to LTN (which even if you walk to the nearest Thameslink station still involves train + bus as Luton Airport Parkway station is not actually at Luton Airport) and looking pretty cheap too.
