Default Vaporetti in Venice, August 2004 (long)

I wouldn't normally venture to advise on Venice, as I am based in
Rome, but I had the good fortune to spend a week there last month, at
the invitation of a friend, and I picked up some information that
could be of use to the group. (Other posts will follow.)

N.B. I am told that the vaporetto routes change frequently, so it is a
good idea to check by calling the ACTV call center Hello Venezia on
041-2424 or visiting the sites www.actv.it and/or www.hellovenezia.it.

The complete ACTV timetable costs 0.60 euro. If you want to make full
use of the vaporetti, you should purchase it as soon as you arrive
(from the ACTV booth at Tronchetto, Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia, Ca'
d'Oro, Accademia or S. Zaccaria) and study it carefully.

ROUTES
========

On the CANAL GRANDE - From Piazzale Roma to S. Marco/S. Zaccaria

Line 1 (every 10 minutes): calls at every stop (including Madonna
della Salute) and continues to Arsenale, Giardini, S. Elena and Lido.
Returns by the same route.

Line 82 (from Tronchetto car-park - every 10 minutes) stops at
Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia, San Marcuola (not always), Rialto, S. Tomà,
S. Samuele, Accademia and Vallaresso (San Marco). During the summer
months it continues to Giardini and Lido. It then goes back to
Tronchetto around the outside of Venice, via Isola S. Giorgio and
Isola della Giudecca. Same route also operates in the other direction.

Line 3 (from Tronchetto - every 20 minutes): a fast route, stopping
only at Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia, S. Samuele, Accademia and S. Marco.
It then crosses to Isola S. Giorgio and Giudecca, returning to
Tronchetto around the western side of Venice. It is complemented by
Line 4 in the opposite direction.
These lines are much less crowded than the no. 82, which in turn is
somewhat less crowded than the no. 1. They are also cheaper (see
below).

CIRCOLARI

The 82, 3 and 4 are "circolari", in that they follow a circular route,
but the lines generally referred to as Circolari are 41, 42, 51 and
52, which mostly go round the outside of Venice but pass through the
Canale Scomenzera and Canale Cannaregio. The 42 and 52 go clockwise,
while the 41 and 51 go anticlockwise. They all call at Piazzale Roma,
Ferrovia and S. Zaccaria (for St. Mark's).

41/42 starts and ends at Murano; it also makes 3 stops on Isola della
Giudecca. 51/52 starts and ends at the Lido and does not call at the
Giudecca.

For the ISLANDS (Murano, Burano, Torcello): The Circolari 41 and 42 go
to Murano. (They make several stops in Murano.) A larger ferry (LN)
leaves from Fondamenta Nove every half-hour (.10 and .40) and calls at
Murano Faro (.19 and .49), Mazzorbo and Burano, proceeding to
Treporti, Punta Sabbioni, Lido and S. Zaccaria (St Mark's). Return
trip departs S. Zaccaria .15 and .45, leaves Burano for
Murano/Fondamenta Nove at .26 and .56. A small vaporetto goes to and
fro between Burano and Torcello (from Burano .00 and .30, from
Torcello .15 and .45).

For the AIRPORT (Marco Polo):

Alilaguna Rossa starts from Zattere and calls at S. Marco at 4.35 -
5.35 - 6.50 then at .50 of every hour until 22.50. It stops at S.
Zaccaria, Arsenale, Lido S.M.E. and Murano Museo (.30) on the way to
the airport.

Alilaguna Blu starts from S. Marco at 8.20, then at .20 of every hour
until 23.20. It stops at S. Zaccaria, Lido, Fondamenta Nove and Murano
Colonna (.10) on the way to the airport.

N.B. There is a free shuttle bus from the airport pier to the terminal
and vice versa.

TRAGHETTI
===========

It is possible to cross the Canal Grande by gondola at S. Marcuola
(mornings only), S. Sofia (to reach the fish market from Cannaregio),
S. Toma', Ca' Rezzonico and Giglio.

N.B.
======

MADONNA DELLA SALUTE is only served by the no. 1; S. PIETRO CASTELLO
only by the no. 52 (and not by the 51, which skips it on the return
route).

TICKETS
==========

Where to buy tickets
------------------------
Tickets are sold at the ACTV booths (see above) and at some shops,
generally tobacconists. They can also be purchased on the vaporetto,
but if you board without a ticket, you must buy one from the conductor
immediately to avoid a fine.

Canal Grande
----------------
Special ticket costing 5 euro, valid for 90 minutes for any number of
trips. But according to the official timetable, tickets for routes 3
and 4 up/down the Canal Grande cost 3.50 euro single, 7 euro return,
making this the cheapest option for seeing the Canal Grande on your
way from Tronchetto, Piazzale Roma or the railway station (Ferrovia)
to the Accademia or San Marco.

All other routes (not valid on Canal Grande)
--------------------
All routes within Venice proper and including Murano by 41/42 (though
possibly not by ferry): single trip 3.50 euro, return trip 6 euro.
Return tickets are valid until midnight on the day they are
date-stamped.

Passes
----------
24-hour pass: 10.50 euro

72-hour pass: 22.00 euro

Passes include travel on the Lido buses.

Note that passes are valid for the exact number of hours from the time
when they are first stamped. If you time it right, with a 72-hour pass
you can have three full days' sightseeing, plus an extra ride up or
down the Canal Grande early in the morning of Day 4 (or on the evening
of Day 0).

Remember, too, that you can use the pass in the evenings, to go and
have a gelato on the Zattere or just to see Venice or the Lido by
night. It is therefore an excellent option if you are staying long
enough to make full use of it.

Alilaguna (to Marco Polo airport)
--------------------------------------
From Venice proper 10 euro, from Murano 5 euro. This means that the
cheapest option for reaching the airport is to take the 41 or 42 to
Murano (3.50 euro) and then the Alilaguna from there to the airport (5
euro). The 41 and 42 stop at both Murano Museo and Murano Colonna:
note that the stop you use will depend on whether the next boat due is
Alilaguna Rossa or Alilaguna Blu (see above).

Gondola-traghetto across the Canal Grande
-----------------------------------------------
I am reliably informed that this costs less than 1 euro, but I didn't
try it myself.

During busy periods ( at the discretion of the line operators, but it is
usually daytime in the tourist season) every other 82 goes only from
Piazalle Roma to Rialto. The cry is " Solo Rialto."
