Without a doubt in my mind, the prettiest town in North America is Old
Quebec City. Next in line for me is Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The United Nations has recognized both of these as well and declared them the only 2 "International Cities" in North America. Another town of notable mention is Niagara-on-the-Lake just north of Niagara Falls. And, no, I am not a Canadian. I hail from the also beautiful city of San Diego, CA. Jackson Hole, WY? Lets hear it! |

Old Quebec City in winter mixes the best of old world beauty with North
American geography. No other city in the world compares to old Quebec over Christmas and New Years' IMHO. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a gorgeous community as well, but it is very very tiny. Its limited to a very small number of streets. I do confess to visiting it every other year or so, I just try to leave my bankbook at home since the stores are very very (very) high end. Not having travelled most of the southern US I confess my choices for beautiful are very limited, but I'll vollunteer the following: Most beautiful cities: Vancouver (spring/summer), Quebec City (fall/winter). Most beautiful towns: #1 vote is Whiterock BC, followed by Banff Springs, Jasper, and Canmore (all in Alberta). Whiterock is a gorgeous seaside town right on the border with the US, gets 50% of the rain that Vancouver gets but is only 90 minutes away. Has a very southern France/Brighton feel as a seaside town, lots of restaurants and gorgeous scenery. Ontario has quite a few 'quaint' small towns as well I can volunteer from personal experience. Fergus is similar to an 18th century european town built around a mill, and it hosts Ontario's Highland Games in the summer. The town square had a very old-world feel, with the river running through it and all of the stone buildings. Kleinberg is threatened with Toronto urban sprawl, but is very quaint and hosts the McMichael Art Gallery (Group of 7, quintessential Canadian painters). Finally, Belfountain in Caledon is required viewing in fall...the Forks of the Credit offer the best fall colours in southern Ontario. On a good day Fergus, Kleinberg and Belfountain all can compete with the Banffs and Jaspers and Whiterocks of the world, but they lack the geopgrahy that makes the later examples so unique. My $0.02. |
