Default driving in fear

You must frighten very easily. LA is a bit different and as is usual in
a big city the freeways can be confusing if you do not know them and do
not plan your route but I see no validity to your comment.

Many of the side streets are even more scary.

I am scared of people who are scared of driving on any highway.....

somehow I see you jumping over at the last second, despite the right
lane ends 1/2 mile signs, exit only signs, etc.....

Nonsense. There are places where the locals have such bad driving habits
that people who follow the normal rules of the road are bound to run
into trouble. The city closest to me is a good example. Most people
drive in the left lane no matter how slow they are going, though they
seem to resent people passing them on the right. They rarely turn into
the proper lane. If driving in the right lane and you see someone trying
to get onto the road in your direction there is no need to pull over to
the left to give them room to pull out, because that is the lane they
are heading for. If you are making a turn at the intersection to two
four lane roads a car coming one way and making a right turn and a car
coming the opposite direction and making a left should both be able to
turn at the same time, each going to the closest lane. Not in that city.
The guy making the left is heading for the far right lane and the one
turning right is heading for the far left.

In a larger nearby city it is a bad idea to leave a safe following
distance, because someone is going to swoop into it, and is pretty well
guaranteed to hit the brakes as soon as they are in front of you. And
don't signal a lane change. That is a cue for someone to speed up and
prevent you from making the change.
