questions re. upgrades for AA Gold/Exec/Plat

Hey a few questions re. AAdvantage Elite status complimentary upgrades
(i am new to AA Gold) couldn't quite decipher these from the member info:

- if you are on a multi leg trip, and an upgrade is not available on one
leg can you still get upgraded on the other legs?

- for complimentary upgrades, do you have to call in advance and request
the upgrade, or do they process it for you automatically and you just find
out at the aeroport whether you got upgraded or not?

Yes. And, if you wish, you can stand by at the gate for an upgrade.

You can do it when you book the reservation. Then, in your case, if it
is available 24 hours ahead, you can get it. Or... if you didn't do it
when you booked, you can do it by the voice response phone system. Or..
you can do it online. If you didn't book online, you can still enter the
reservation locator to have the info available online. Online, in the
reservation, there are boxes you can check. If you don't want to upgrade
a segment, you can still check the box for the other segments.
