lhasa old house in Tibet
LHASA OLD HOUSE Lhasa is one of few impressive surviving traditional urban centers in Tibet, as the Tibetan architecture is increasingly being recognized as one of the great architectural heritages of the world. If you are interested in the Tibetan architecture, you'd better go to Oedepug£¨ÎԶѲ¼£©. Oedepug £¨ÎԶѲ¼£©is located in the south-eastern section of the Barkor, and is the name for the residential area behind the Jokhang Monastery, where supposedly the art workers were accommodated during the construction of a temple. In fact several of the houses here claim to have a historical connection with the King Songtsen Gampo. The name Oedepug also means "a place of corvee labour", or "low place where (commands) are heard". In this area there are 14 old residential buildings which epitomize the historic cultural identity of the old city. As two fine examples of ancient architects in Oedepug Alleyway£¨ÎԶѲ¼ Ï£¬Doekyilzur£¨¶à¼ªËÕ£© and Beijing Tsongkhang£¨±±¾©´Ó¿µ£© are the significant buildings of 76 legally-protected traditional courtyards proclaimed by the Lhasa Municipal Government. Each house has been marked with a special plaque. The courtyards are located in the east of the Barkor Street. They are the historic residential buildings with the typical Tibetan architectural style. They have a framework consisting of "four beams and eight pillars." The main building, which always faces south, is two or three stories high. Around the yard are rooms connected by corridors leading to the yard. Doekyilzur can date back to 7th century and was rebuilt in 1850. According to a popular legend, it was the royal court and owned by a famous wealthy businessman in old Tibet. The house embodies some of utmost architectural details. The Potala Palace and the Jokhang temple can be seen from several viewpoints on the roof of Doekyilzur. Beijing Tsongkhang was the habitation of the nobilities of old Tibet, and in 1920s was owned by Liu Xia, a famous officer of the Gaxag government. Then Liu Xia sold it to a merchant called Mr. Han Xiujun. As Mr.Han came from Beijing, the house was renamed to the Beijing Tsongkhang. In fact, there is a love story with this house. Mr. Han Xiujun fell in love with a Tibetan girl of a local merchant. Father of the girl promised to marry her daughter to Mr. Han if he could own a royal house. After tremendous hardship and efforts, Han finally bought this house and got married with this girl. The young couple gave birth to two daughters and lived a happy life. Mr. Han died in 2003 and his wife died in sorrow a few months later. Some of their items are still in display in the House.
