Default cheap hotel in manhattan in June

I'm planning to stay to New York one week in June and I'm looking for
a cheap hotel , clean and close to the city centre; I've tried with
www.hotwire.com, www.priceline.com or www.hotel.com, but I didn't
find, for a dobule room with private toilette, accomodation down 230$.
Could you help me, please?
Depending of hotel price the "Big Apple" is the most expensive city in
the world?!?
I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Regards

Roberto

Try www.sidestep.com, which shows the BW President, 234 West
48th Street, and the Mayfair New York, 242 W. 49th Street, each
for $212 US. Neither of them "great," but acceptable and well
positioned.

Try "http://tinyurl.com/6k4uft" (which is
http://web.archive.org/web/200708140...://www.spanish
newyork.com/hotels-in-manhattan.html).

Some of it is almost certainly out of date, but many of the hotels
should still exist, at higher prices of course.

For some reason the http://www.spanish
newyork.com site took the hotel page off their site, but thanks to the
archive the old version still exists. A lot of these hotels are shared
bath, but many have some rooms with private bath. I.e., the Murray Hill
Inn has small private rooms with bath for $149.

Small rooms are the norm. I stayed in a very expensive boutique hotel
(stayed free because I won a contest at a radio station) and was amazed
at how tiny the room was, and supposedly it wasn't the smallest room.
This was the Dream Inn, where the room price hovers around $400.

Keep trying priceline and hotwire; you should be able to
find something under $150. However, be prepared to accept a
"boutique" room at that price in New York.

"Boutique" translates to a large bed but a tiny room, with
barely enough space around the bed to get around it.

I stayed in that type of room for a little over $111 per
night in the Paramount in 2006 and $117 (incl taxes)at the
Clarion Gem last month.

One problem with priceline and hotwire may be the 7 days, as
the hotels may have higher rates for one or two nights in a
week that excludes them from a week-long booking. It may be
worth selecting some of the cheaper 2.5* and 3* hotels in
the district you want on Expedia and contacting them direct
by email to see if they will offer a discount for a
week-long stay.

New York is very expensive, but a recent survey found that Honolulu is
the most expensive U.S. city for tourists (average of $673 a day for
food and lodging for 2). New York came in second at $606, followed by
Miami, San Diego, and Las Vegas.

I believe there are cities in Europe and Asia that are even more
expensive (possibly London and Tokyo, for example), although I don't
have a link for that.

Well, if you want to spend top dollar, you can always find places where you
can spend top dollar. $673 a day in Honolulu is a bit on the pricey side.
Here's a look at some less expensive Honolulu alternatives from
Travelzoo.... http://hotels.travelzoo.com/hawaii-hotels/

Yup...$79 or $60 a night is not going to put you on the beach with a view of
the sunset. But, then, neither is it $673 a night. And I suspect that you
will be hard pressed to spend something like $600 a day - the difference
between that $673 and that $79 room - on meals, even in Honolulu. I think
going to local restaurants, I for one would be able to sustain two people on
something well less than $100 a day.

Las Vegas is an interesting place....lots and lots of rooms available on
weekdays (Sunday through Thursday nights) when no convention is in town. So
time your trip right and you can find rooms all the way down to the $40 or
$50 a night range, as per from
Travelzoo....http://hotels.travelzoo.com/las-vegas-hotels/

Now if you plan to be in the area over the weekend, visit and stay in the
surrounding environs - Death Valley, Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, etc. This
puts you away from Las Vegas for the week end when that same room can go for
double or even triple the weekday rate.

And here is what Travelzoo has currently available for New York City -
http://hotels.travelzoo.com/new-york-hotels/

It goes close at the Royal Grove. $73 including taxes, two
blocks from the main Waikiki Beach.

The first shot is taken from taken from the beach; the
second is taken from the balcony of my room:

Not luxury, nor a resort, but good clean, comfortable
accommodation. All I did there was sleep and cook breakfast.

For views of the sunset I ate at the beachside places -
Marriott, Tikis etc. They were happy to get paying customers
in the restaurants and didn't exclude guests from other
hotels.

Why pay overpriced accommodation when you're only going to
sleep there?

First, thanks all to suggestions!
My budget is about 200$ per room per night.
After 1 day of "hotel hunting" activity I continue to think NY is a
wonderful city but the hotel in NY are more expensive than every
important city;
For example I come from Europe (Rome) and, also in most expensive
place like London Paris & Berlin, with my budget (200$=130€) we can
find great accomodations close to the city centre.
Thanks again!

It goes close [to an ocean view] at the Royal Grove....

Reminds me of the time I visited Paris and booked a room that had a
"view of the Eiffel Tower". Yeah... if I leaned out the window I could
barely see it off in the distance.
