Right. So its pretty clear US perception of that road is different
from European, where most people who get out away from the "main
drags" will think it routine.

I have always state in this thread that the "danger" of the road can
be overstated. It's not an issue of "danger" it is an issue of utility
for
"sight seeing". Furthermore, anyone who suggests that driving on the
PCH gives them any insight into driving on the Amalfi coast is kidding
themselves.

The last bit of the 'free road' descending down into Ensenada, Mx is
closer to Amalfi.

The Pacific Coast Highway, where it's not in a town with signals or
straight, is wide with gentle curves easily taken at 60mph/100kph.
Much of the Cabrillo Highway, on the other hand, is narrow and quite
sinuous, especially as it traverses Big Sur.
