My Dad (born in 1912), used to tell me: "you don't know what it's like
to be hungry." Surfers words are not out of line. The money may have
started to flow after WW2, but before that time, the poor people far out
numbered the rich. My Dad had 7 or 8 Brothers and Sisters. Large
families were the norm for back then. He always recalled the time when
his mother had to resort to raiding a woodpecker nest in order to make a
soup to feed them. Christmas consisted of their Dad buying the kids a
single bucket of hard candy. ....My Dad died in /99 at the age of 87, a
millionaire. ...Jon

Hey Ebbtide ....I don't think my Dad was too unhappy about it either
;-) The 30s were a tough time for many. Sure glad I didn't have to
live through them. ....My Dad rode the box car roof half way across the
country in hopes of finding a job. ...Jon

No only had to walk 7 blocks to school, and yes we did have to put
cardboard in the soles of our shoes, you may make fun of these things, but
you were probably one of the luckier ones,if you are old enough to
remember, father walked out beginning of depression, and left my mother
with 8 kids to raise,so do not put me down for what we had to endure, and
yes i cruise, but only because i was lucky enough to marry a great
guy, that knows how to plan for rainy days

Well said, Surfer.... There's nothing more aggravating than seeing these
people with the "live for today" attitude, squander all their money,
then expect the tax payers to look after them for the rest of their
lives. ...Meanwhile, the ones that have by-passed many of the luxuries
of life in order to secure a future for themselves, get stuck with
higher fees and taxes, because the government feels they should help pay
the welfare for the pot-smoking dead-beats. ...Jon

That's what makes people honest and strong. I think it is great that the
old man was a millionaire and the son did his thing. Too many people
intimidated in this world by other people opinions and the $$$. Just my 2
cents worth.

Many are of the opinion that if the parents are well off, so are the
children. Not always true, "campy", I worked in the logging industry
for years, and paid my own way. ....Jon
