Indeed. Let's see. What have "a _lot_" of people learned in the last day
or so?

1. Spout a statistic off the top of your head just for the heck of it.

2. When asked where you got the figure from, claim you read it
somewhere, you forget where, and it doesn't matter, because you
considered it an excellent source at the time.

3. Turn the discussion onto some meta-issue in order to deflect
attention from 1.

4. Start all over again.

Eventually, people are so irritated by my style that they start to watch
their posts and mine a lot more carefully. And so their competent at
critical analysis develops.

To the contrary. Eventually, people are so irritated by your style that more
time gets wasted (and I am as guilty as anyone) carping about your style
than the subject at hand, without any particular elevation in the quality of
discussion.

I don't watch my posts any more carefully due to your 'style'. I do,
however, notice that you render yourself more and more irrelevant with
each ludicrous post you make.
