Default White Island via helicopter

Has anyone taken a helicopter tour to White Island?

If so, what company and how was the experience? Here are a couple of
companies I am considering for a trip in mid August. Also, hows the
temp. that time of year?

Why would you consider a helicopter tour to the White Island unless you
were coming from Rotorua. I went there by boat from Whakatane and the
trip through the gannet colony and the fish shoals with the underwater
camera added to the experience.

White Island was, incidentally, on of the highlights of my trip to New
Zealand. Go with a helicopter if you must.

Well, I've never been in a helicopter, and its a quicker trip, and I
can get some air shots with my camera. More expensive though.

Great to hear it was one of the highlights. I've climbed Mt. St.
Helens a couple of times and am somewhat the volcano lover.

White Island is something different. For an equivalent experience to
climbing Mt ST Helens (I imagine) do the Tongariro Crossing where you
climb up a volcano, pass through a crater and on the rim of another
crater (both extinct) with full view of two other volcanoes (one very
active). It's a one-day walk, moderately difficult.

White Island is relatively flat and full of vents of sulphur and
chlorine and you are given masks to wear as sometimes the fumes are
highly unpleasant. I still think the gannet colony on the island makes a
sailing trip more recommendable than a heli trip.

I'd love to do the Tongariro crossing, but in mid August, wouldn't it
be a bit cold and snowy?

And for any other volcano buffs, here are my feet atop Mt. St. Helens
from about 30 months ago:

I don't know, the height is 1800m so it's not so high, but the first
climb would be very slippery. But you'd have to check locally, the
weather changes quickly...
