Default Red Star Line museum

http://www.deredactie.be/cm/de.redac...%2BStar%2BLine

Sat 28/02/09 14:37 (UPDATE video) - In the spring of 2012 a new museum
will be opened in Antwerp called the Red Star Line. The museum is to
be named after the shipping company that took millions of immigrants
to the United States at the end of the 19th century and the beginning
of the 20th century. The Antwerp coordination team, working on setting
up the museum, is working in close collaboration with the museum on
Ellis Island in New York.
(Belga)

After all the economic and political talks of the past week in the
United States, the Flemish Prime Minister Kris Peeters finally had
time for some history during his trip to New York.

Together with representatives of the Antwerp coordination team, he
visited Ellis Island.

Ellis Island is the symbol of immigration to the United States. 17
million people passed through this great hall of Ellis Island - all of
them in search of a better life in far away America.

Ellis Island was the gateway to the new world and the link with
Antwerp was important through the Antwerp red Star Line.

The Red Star Line Museum is looking for inspiration at Ellis Island on
how to do displays, use records to track down descendants of
immigrants, and innovative ways to bring the immigrants' stories
alive. The Ellis Island Foundation has promised to help the Red Star
Line Museum in as many ways as possible.

The Ellis Island Foundation has even agreed to return some things to
Antwerp such as suitcases that went missing during the journey to New
York and were recovered later on but never claimed. Boxes of documents
with memoirs of immigrants who left for the New World from Antwerp
have also been made available.
