How do you pass the time on flights?
How do you travelers pass time on long flights? I am flying from NY to
Hawaii this coming Saturday - the total flight is 12 hours with 15hour duration. The prior plan was to take a water bottle filled with vodka to make the flight a bit more enjoyable, but due to re-consideration and recent events, I have decided not to take the vodka. I will have my laptop with me on the plane so that should be good to watch a movie, but what about the other 10 hours? How do you all pass time in the plane on long flights, other than books? I'll be flying ATA - I have heard that on long flights there is entertainment such as movie showings, gps tracking to watch the progress of your flight, etc. Does ATA offer these? What could be some creative ways to pass the time? Brian |

A book is of course essential, and talking to your neighbour is something you might regret if you start it too early :-) Just don't fall asleep for too long, thats a receipe for DVT - And dont forget your flight socks and (subject to doc's approval) asprin before and after the flight. |

Aside from the fact that consuming your own alcohol in flight is phrohibited by most airlines, it's a bad idea in general. Alcohol is a natural diuretic, not something you need in the dry atmosphere of an long haul flight. How do you pass the time on flights?
Brian extrapolated from data available...

All for the better. a water bottle might not enough to have become mewling and puking drunk, leaning forward to see if "Ralph...." or "Earl...." were under your seat. What could be some creative ways to pass the time? Brian Have you considered a complaisant female companion and a large blanket? You may not need the blanket in the H'aisles, but bringing along a friend improves most vacations. TMO |

Brian Best thing for a flight that long is to take some Unisom (or Tylenol PM, or Nyquil), put in some earplugs if you need them, put on a mask to block out the light if you need it, and sleep your way to your destination. The airlines have made it very unpleasant to fly conscious in coach. Some fragile richlings even think first class is cramped and unpleasant. Never thought I'd refer to Ben Stein as a fragile richling, but: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/20/bu...6dd9&ei=5 070 (from the New York Times article above "It hit me like an atomic bomb last week as I boarded a morning flight from Boston to Phoenix on America West Airlines. Here is a basic series of truths: Modern business is largely about air travel. Modern air travel is largely torture. Therefore, much of modern business is torture. I was sitting in my incredibly cramped seat in the incredibly cramped, tiny first-class cabin and I got up to use the lavatory. As I did, I looked back in coach in what I think was a Boeing 757, a long, wide single-aisle plane with three-and-three coach seating that seemingly went back forever. The passengers were galley slaves on a Roman trireme, chained to their seats in the hold. They were lashed to their pagers, their BlackBerries, their cellphones, lashed to their employers and their duties to keep rowing for the empire until they died at their posts...." |
