A good article in today's San Jose Mercury News, mostly about EVA, but
about some other airlines as well.

See "http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_9716247?source=rss" (limited
time).

My 14 y.o. daughter went on EVA to Taiwan for an exchange program in
April. When asked how the flight was, she said it was really cool
because when you pushed the call button somebody actually responds. Plus
you can have all the cups of instant ramen noodles that you want. But
what that article didn't say is that EVA is using ancient 747s on the
SFO to TPE route, with no video systems, not new 777s as the article
implies.

The artical didn't say that they wer ancienct 747's because they aren't!

All the 747's are the 400 series (all-passenger and combi), and were
delivered new to EVA between 1998 and 2002. Lots of other carriers use
older planes across the pacific (NW, JAL, United, China Airlines, etc.).

The fleet age can be found he

If you go to the link "related stories" and go to "Foreign Carriers Take
Flight, you will see the information that was on page 17A of the
hardcopy of the paper, right next to the article you posted the link for
above. It clearly states that EVA will replace the 747s with 777s by
mid September. Info on the other carriers can also be found at this
link. Additionally, "Arriving At S.F. Airport" is also related, and
carriers coming to SF. This is also found on page 17A of the hard copy
of the SJ "Murky" News

Ok, we know that north american carriers now have little to no service
on domestic flights. (with a couple exceptions).

But is the coach service on trans-pacific flights really *that*
different between the USA airlines and their asia/sopac counterparts ?
