I am told that at the moment, when you enter the terminal at Islay
airport, there is a sign saying to beware of adders. The terminal
building and car park are full of them, and as they're a protected
species, there isn't a lot that can be done about it.

It would probably be more useful to warn people not to try to pick them up.
They rarely bite people in any other situation.

I assumed the notice was to protect the adders, not people.

Hi

Off topic, but a few years ago, my wife and I moved house to a small
village in England.

Shortly after moving in, we took our two dogs for a walk along an
overgrown public footpath across some local scrubland. After a few
minutes one of the dogs (at the time he was just a six month old
puppy) suddenly collapsed and went into shock for no obvious reason.
We rushed him to the vets, who at first was completely baffled; then
spotted two marks on his front leg - an adder bite. Luckily our local
(human) hospital had serum in stock, which was rushed to the vets and
quickly administered by drip overnight; amazingly the puppy made a
full recovery in a couple of days.

Our dog became a local celebrity in the village for a time, but
everyone said the same thing, "Oh, didn't you know about the adders?
That's why nobody uses that footpath - the place is crawling with
them."

I had never actually seen a live adder in my life before then; didn't
see the adder that bit my dog (presumably neither did the dog!!) and I
have never seen one since.

Mind you, there is the time on holiday when I very nearly trod on a
(very lively) sidewinder rattlesnake lurking under a drinks vending
machine inside a store in Southern Arizona - but that is another (off
topic) story!!!!

Regards

I looked at this thread for pure curiosity. I had no idea where Islay is
(though the name makes me think of some scottish island ... google maps
redirects me to a place in Germany, but google proper found the airport
and confirmed my supposition). But in particular I had no idea what
"adders" are. I gather from the thread they are some sort of snakes.

But if I'd seen the sign, as a foreigner, I'd thought "why should I
beware of an adding machine" ? And after that wondered what adders could
be ... some shopkeeper which "adds" some extra to the prices ?

Given the paucity of pizenous sarpints in Eire, could they be rounded
up and dropped among a people unused to them?

Or perhaps we could round up a few Irish saints and bring them over
here to have them deal with it. They could go on to exorcize Scotland
of Donald Trump when they were done.
